  "So long as we combine ceaseless and often reckless scientific speculation with rapid and often random social reform, the result must inevitably be not anarchy but ever-increasing tyranny. There must be a ceaseless and almost mechanical multiplication of things forbidden. The resolution to cure all the ills that flesh is heir to, combined with the guesswork about all possible ills that flesh and nerve and brain-cell may be heir to – these two things conducted simultaneously must inevitably spread a sort of panic of prohibition. Scientific imagination and social reform between them will quite logically and almost legitimately have made us slaves."

  Why originalism is a flawed, incoherent, and dangerously ideological method of constitutional interpretation 
   
   
   
  Originalism, the view that the meaning of a constitutional provision is fixed when it is adopted, was once the fringe theory of a few extremely conservative legal scholars but is now a well-accepted mode of constitutional interpretation. Three of the Supreme Court's nine justices explicitly embrace the originalist approach, as do increasing numbers of judges in the lower courts. 
   
   
    
  Noted legal scholar Erwin Chemerinsky gives a comprehensive analysis of the problems that make originalism unworkable as a method of constitutional interpretation. He argues that the framers themselves never intended constitutional interpretation to be inflexible and shows how it is often impossible to know what the "original intent" of any particular provision was. Perhaps worst of all, though its supporters tout it as a politically neutral and objective method, originalist interpretation tends to disappear when its results fail to conform to modern conservative ideology.

  In essence, that is the problem that this book seeks to remedy. This is to say that The Sane Citizens Political Handbook takes some of the most divisive political issues of our time and breaks them down in a non-partisan way so that you, the sane citizen who is fed up with the current Republican/Democrat duopoly, can have a reasonable position on those issues that is grounded in logic, science, and the US Constitution, not one of the two major political parties. 
  With that said, if you, like me, are tired of party lines and political tribalism, then put on your thinking cap, crack open this book, and break free from the red and blue chains that have been systematically enslaving you.
