Sinopse

"Ladder Climbs High" explores the fascinating history of the ladder, a tool that has profoundly shaped human civilization. From ancient notched tree trunks to modern, precision-engineered designs, the book examines the ladder's evolution and its integral role in construction, architecture, and even cultural symbolism. Intriguingly, the ladder's development mirrors humanity's quest for upward mobility, both literally and figuratively, revealing how a simple tool has enabled increasingly complex and ambitious building projects throughout history.

The book approaches this topic by delving into the historical context of the ladder's use, beginning with evidence from prehistoric settlements and progressing through ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. It highlights the ladder's use in constructing monumental structures, such as pyramids and temples, and its subsequent adaptation in medieval and Renaissance architecture for cathedrals and castles.

The study culminates with an analysis of the ladder's symbolic representation across cultures, showcasing its enduring significance. The book's structured narrative unfolds across chapters, first introducing the ladder's earliest uses and then progressing through distinct stages of architectural history.

By elevating the ladder to a subject of serious study, "Ladder Climbs High" offers a unique perspective on architectural history and human innovation, demonstrating how this often-overlooked tool has profoundly shaped our world.

The Vikings and sainthood are not concepts normally found side by side. But Norway’s King Olaf II Haraldsson (c. 995-1030) embodied both to an extraordinary degree. As a battle-eager teenager he almost single-handedly pulled down London Bridge (as in the nursery rhyme) and took part in many other Viking raids. Olaf lacked none of the traditional Viking qualities of toughness and audacity, yet his routine baptism grew into a burning missionary faith that was all the more remarkable for being combined with his typically Viking determination and energy – and sometimes ruthlessness as well. His overriding mission was to Christianize Norway and extirpate heathenism. His unstinting efforts, often at great peril to his life, earned him the Norwegian throne in 1015, when he had barely reached his twenties. For the next fifteen years he labored against immense odds to subdue the rebellious heathen nobles of Norway while fending off Swedish hostility. Both finally combined against Olaf in 1030, when he fell bravely in battle not far from Trondheim, still only in his mid-thirties. After his body was found to possess healing powers, and reports of them spread from Scandinavia to Spain and Byzantium, Olaf II was canonized a saint 134 years later. He remains Norway’s patron saint as well as a legendary warrior. Yet more remarkably, he remains a saint not only of the Protestant church but also of the Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox Churches – perhaps the only European fighting saint to achieve such acceptance.

Bla_K is a collection of previously out-of-print essays and new works by one of Canada's most important writers and thinkers.

Through an engagement with her earlier work, M. NourbeSe Philip comes to realize the existence of a repetition in the world: the return of something that, while still present, has become unembedded from the world, disappeared. Her imperative becomes to make us see what has gone unseen by writing memory upon the margin of history, in the shadow of empire and at the frontier of silence.

In heretical writings that work to make the disappeared perceptible, Bla_K explores questions of timeliness, recurrence, ongoingness, art, race, the body politic, and the so-called multicultural nation. Through these considerations, Philip creates a linguistic form that registers the presence of what has seemingly dissolved, a form that also imprints the loss and the silence surrounding those disappearances in its very presence.

Autism – that’s being able to count matches really fast and knowing that 7 August 1984 was a Tuesday, right? Well, no. In this book, Bianca Toeps explains in great detail what life is like when you’re autistic. She does this by looking at what science says about autism (and why some theories can go straight in the bin), but also by telling her own story and interviewing other autistics. Bianca talks in a refreshing and sometimes hilarious way about different situations autistic people encounter in daily life. She has some useful tips for non-autistic people too: what you should do if someone prefers not to look you in the eye, why it is sometimes better to communicate by email, and, most important of all, why it is not a compliment if you say: “But you don’t look autistic at all!”
