Summary

The "Khmer Kingdom" explores the fascinating story of the Khmer Empire, a dominant force in Southeast Asia renowned for its architectural prowess and sophisticated socio-political structures. The book traces the empire's rise, highlighting the construction of Angkor Wat, a testament to their advanced engineering and artistic skills, and examines the factors contributing to its eventual decline. This book uniquely integrates historical narratives with recent scholarship and interdisciplinary connections to provide a comprehensive understanding of this ancient civilization.

The book argues that the Khmer Empire's success stemmed from its innovative water management systems and agricultural productivity, which allowed it to exert influence over a vast region. However, these very systems, along with a rigid social hierarchy, ultimately made the empire vulnerable to environmental changes, external invasions, and internal strife.

Delving into archaeology, epigraphic inscriptions, and contemporary accounts, the book progresses chronologically, from the empire's geographical setting and early kingdoms to the reigns of key monarchs and the factors leading to its decline, offering insights into the rediscovery and preservation of Angkor.

Washington's Harrowing Escape from the Hudson Valley
In October 1776 central Westchester witnessed a critical episode in the early campaign of George Washington's ragtag Continental Army and its quest for American independence. Often overlooked as just an interval between the disastrous Battle of Brooklyn and victory at Trenton, the Battle of White Plains showcased Washington's sly strategy of perseverance. Poor decision making and ignorance of the area's hilly terrain among British leadership gave the patriot army a chance to secure a path to safety despite being on the run and outmanned. Though British General Howe claimed victory, the battle's lessons informed Washington's cat and mouse strategy that ultimately brought success later in the war.
Author Stephen Paul DeVillo presents just how close the American cause for independence came to being extinguished at the Battle of White Plains.

Neem Karoli Baba known to his followers as Maharaj-ji - was a great Hindu guru, mystic and devotee of Lord Hanuman. He is very well known outside India for being the spiritual master of a number of prominent Americans who traveled to India in the 1960s and 70s, including spiritual teachers Ram Dass, Bhagavan Das, and musicians Krishna Das and Jai Uttal. His ashrams are in Kainchi, Vrindavan, Rishikesh, Shimla, Neem Karoli village near Khimasepur in Farrukhabad, Bhumiadhar, Hanumangarhi, Delhi in India and in Taos, New Mexico. Maharaji was a lifelong adept of bhakti yoga, and encouraged service to others (seva) as the highest form of unconditional devotion to God.

There can be no biography of him. Facts are few, stories many. He seems to have been known by different names in many parts of India, appearing and disappearing through the years. His non-Indian devotees of recent years knew him as Neem Karoli Baba, but mostly as “Maharajji” – a nickname so commonplace in India that one can often hear a tea vendor addressed thus. Just as he said, he was "nobody". He gave no discourses; the briefest, simplest stories were his teachings. Usually, he sat or lay on a wooden bench wrapped in a plaid blanket while a few devotees sat around him. Visitors came and went; they were given food, a few words, a nod, a pat on the head or back, and they were sent away.
