Summary

The british empire comprised a bewildering collection of colonies, dominions, protectorates, and mandated possessions that spanned the planet. This was the largest empire in world history, at its peak ruling over more than 400 million people and covering almost one-quarter of the total land mass of the earth. No wonder it became known as “the empire on which the sun never set.” How did this happen? How did england, a relatively small country, first come to dominate the neighboring countries of wales, scotland, and ireland and then go on to build this mighty, global empire? This book will guide you through the rise and the fall of the mighty british empire, including:The age of exploration and how britain expanded its empireBritish involvement in the slave tradeThe mystery behind the lost colony of roanokeThe english civil wars and their impact on the empireA brief look at the thirteen colonies and how they achieved independenceA guide to britain’s role in the napoleonic warsRising nationalist movements in the 20th centuryA comprehensive explanation of the fall of the british empireAnd much, much more! The growing independence movement saw the emergence of one of the most influential and charismatic political leaders ever: mahatma gandhi. His policy of non-violent opposition inspired people across the world and helped to guide india to independence. However, with independence came partition as the british divided the region according to religious and ethnic lines. Instead of a single independent nation, the indian subcontinent became two and then three separate nation-states, something that led to violence and conflicts that persist today.

Hallowed Ground examines the surprising traditions, customs, superstitions, and secular imagery found in Christian churches and churchyards, with a particular emphasis on the traditional rural protestant church.   Beginning with stories associated with the construction of church buildings themselves and the role that they played in the community, the book moves through a number of subjects where everything might not be as it would seem it should be in the Christian church and its grounds.   Expect vestiges of pagan symbols hidden in the fabric of the church building and clergymen rumored to hold strange arcane knowledge of their own, kept within their personal occult libraries. Learn the ways in which you can use the church and its grounds to divine who might die in the next twelve months, where you might find love, and how you might cure illnesses.   Watch out for a number of figures you wouldn’t expect to find on such holy ground, from run-ins with the devil to spectral figures inhabiting the church or its graves. Discover some of the ways in which magic and witchcraft seep into the hallowed ground of the churchyard from outside.  Hallowed Ground will offer more than a few surprises about the folklore that surrounds the church and churchyard and a fascinating insight into the social history of our place of traditional Sunday worship, all delivered with the academic rigor and accessible, engaging style for which the author is known.

    Legacy of Empire - Britain...

It is now more than seventy years since the creation of the state of Israel, yet its origins and the British Empire's historic responsibility for Palestine remain little known. Confusion persists too as to the distinction between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism. In Legacy of Empire, Gardner Thompson offers a clear-eyed review of political Zionism and Britain's role in shaping the history of Palestine and Israel. Thompson explores why the British government adopted Zionism in the early twentieth century, issuing the Balfour Declaration in 1917 and then retaining it as the cornerstone of their rule in Palestine after the First World War. Despite evidence and warnings, over the next two decades Britain would facilitate the colonisation of Arab Palestine by Jewish immigrants, ultimately leading to a conflict which it could not contain. Britain's response was to propose the partition of an ungovernable land: a 'two-state solution' which - though endorsed by the United Nations after the Second World War - has so far brought into being neither two states nor a solution. A highly readable and compelling account of Britain's rule in Palestine, Legacy of Empire is essential for those wishing to better understand the roots of this enduring conflict.

Reading Confederate Monuments addresses the urgent and vital need for scholars, educators, and the general public to be able to read and interpret the literal and cultural Confederate monuments pervading life in the contemporary United States.

The literary and cultural studies scholars featured in this collection engage many different archives and methods, demonstrating how to read literal Confederate monuments as texts and in the context of the assortment of literatures that produced and celebrated them. They further explore how to read the literary texts advancing and contesting Confederate ideology in the US cultural imaginary—then and now—as monuments in and of themselves. On top of that, the essays published here lay bare the cultural and pedagogical work of Confederate monuments and counter-monuments—divulging how and what they teach their readers as communal and yet contested narratives—thereby showing why the persistence of Confederate monuments matters greatly to local and national notions of racial justice and belonging. In doing so, this collection illustrates what critics of US literature and culture can offer to ongoing scholarly and public discussions about Confederate monuments and memory.

Brought to audio through new AI narrative technology, Reading Confederate Monuments teaches us that even as we remove, relocate, and recontextualize the physical symbols of the Confederacy dotting the US landscape, the complicated histories, cultural products, and pedagogies of Confederate ideology remain embedded in the national consciousness. To disrupt and potentially dismantle these enduring narratives alongside the statues themselves, we must be able to recognize, analyze, and resist them in US life. The pieces in this collection position us to think deeply about how and why we should continue that work.
