Sinopse

In "Augustus," Evelyn S. Shuckburgh masterfully explores the life and reign of the first Roman Emperor, weaving a rich tapestry that combines political biography and historical narrative. Her literary style is marked by clarity and vivid description, inviting readers into the intricate world of ancient Rome. Shuckburgh's meticulous research and use of primary sources provide a nuanced understanding of Augustus's complex character, his strategic acumen, and the socio-political landscape that shaped his era, making this work not only informative but also deeply engaging. The book stands as a significant contribution to both classical literature and historiography, bridging the gap between scholarly research and accessible prose. Evelyn S. Shuckburgh, an esteemed historian and translator, has dedicated much of her academic career to the study of Roman history. Her passion for this era is evident in her analytical approach and the depth of her insights. Shuckburgh's extensive knowledge of Latin texts and her background in classical studies are reflected in her ability to present Augustus as both a historical figure and a timeless archetype of power, ambition, and transformation. This dual focus adds layers to her narrative, enriching the reader's experience. "Augustus" is a compelling read for anyone interested in the foundations of imperial Rome, offering a profound understanding of how Augustus shaped not only his own destiny but also the course of Western civilization. Whether you are a student of history, a lover of literature, or simply curious about the complexities of power, Shuckburgh's work is an essential addition to your library.

Exploring the Magic of Childhood in an Era of Discovery and ChangeEisenhower Babies takes readers on a journey to a time when World War II memories were still relatively fresh, space exploration was becoming more than just fantastical subject matter for science fiction, and television had barged its way into American homes, taking up permanent residence in a hallowed spot in front of the living room sofa.Among the millions of Eisenhower Babies who burst on the scene from January 1953 to January 1961 was Ronnie Blair. His memoir of growing up in a Kentucky coal-mining community from the late 1950s to the early 1970s weaves history, popular culture, and geography into a nostalgic journey interspersed with tales of coal-strike tensions and humorous family adventures. Eisenhower Babies is a celebration of the eccentricities of 1960s small-town life, where a police officer might promise to give a four-year-old his gun once the officer ran out of bullets, a neighbor could return from a Florida vacation with a live baby alligator as a new pet, and the children of World War II veterans waged imaginary battles against Hitler’s treachery in their hillside backyards.

Adeline Virginia Woolf was born on the 25th January 1882 in South Kensington in London.
Although lauded as a founder of modernist writing with such classics as ‘Orlando’, ‘Mrs Dalloway’ and ‘To the Lighthouse’ and, of course, many classic short stories, her background is filled with elements of tragedy that she somehow overcame to become such a revered writer. Her mother died when she was 13, her half-sister Stella two years later and with it her first of several nervous breakdowns. Appallingly it was later found that three of her half-brothers had sexually abused her so darkness must have seemed ever present.
She began writing professionally at age 20 but her father’s death two years later brought a complete mental collapse and she was briefly institutionalised. Somehow she found within herself a literary career and with it great innovations in writing; she was a pioneer of “stream of consciousness”.
Her tight circle of friends were the founders of the Bloomsbury Group, a movement whose legacy still influences across the arts and society in many way to this day.
Whilst the dark periods continued to interrupt her emotional state her rate of work never ceased. Until, on 28th March 1941, Woolf put on her overcoat, filled up its pockets with stones, and walked into the River Ouse, in Lewes, East Sussex and drowned herself. Her body was not recovered until the 18th April. She was 59.
She left behind a note which read in part “Dearest, I feel certain that I am going mad again. I feel we can't go through another of those terrible times. And I shan't recover this time. I begin to hear voices, and I can't concentrate. So I am doing what seems the best thing to do”.

There is something about the number 3.

The Ancient Greeks believed 3 was the perfect number, and in China 3 has always been a lucky number, and they know a thing or two.

Most religions also have 3 this and 3 that and, of course, in these more modern times, three’s a crowd may be too many, except when it’s a ménage à trois. It seems good things usually come in threes.

Whatever history and culture says WE think 3, a hat-trick of stories, is a great number to explore themes and literary avenues that classic authors were so adept at creating.
