Summary

"Desert Thirst Traps" explores the critical issue of water scarcity and dehydration dangers encountered in arid regions, essential knowledge as climate change intensifies these challenges. The book uniquely blends physiological understanding with geographical analysis, revealing how swiftly dehydration can impact the human body, progressing from initial thirst to organ failure. It also introduces the concept of 'thirst traps,' perilous locations where water sources are deceptively scarce or contaminated. This exploration begins with understanding human hydration needs and arid land geography.

The book then moves to case studies of travelers facing dire water scarcity, extracting valuable lessons on planning and survival. It examines solutions for mitigating water scarcity risks, connecting environmental science, public health, and historical perspectives. The book’s insights are supported by meteorological records, hydrological surveys, and survival expert accounts, appealing to a broad audience interested in Earth Sciences Geography, Travel, and environmental issues.

By integrating diverse data and real-world applications, "Desert Thirst Traps" provides a comprehensive view of water resource management and human resilience in the face of arid travel challenges.

20-something and uncertain about her future, Florentyna Leow is exhilarated when an old acquaintance offers her an opportunity for work and cohabitation in a little house in the hills of Kyoto.
Florentyna begins a new job as a tour guide, taking tourists on elaborate and expensive trips around Kyoto's cultural hotspots. Amidst the busy tourist traps and overrun temples, Florentyna develops her own personal map of the city: a favourite smoky jazz kissa; a top-shelf katsuobushi loving cat; an elderly lady named Yamaguchi-san, who shares her sweets and gives Florentyna a Japanese name.
Meanwhile, her relationship with her new companion develops an intensity as they live and work together. Their little kitchen, the epicenter of their shared life, overlooks a community garden dominated by a fruitful persimmon tree. Their relationship burns bright, but seasons change, the persimmon tree out back loses its fruit, and things grow strange between the two women.
How Kyoto Breaks Your Heart is a collection about the ways in which heartbreak can fill a place and make it impossible to stay.

In 66 BC, young, ambitious Julius Caesar, seeking recognition and authority, became the curator of the Via Appia. He borrowed significant sums to restore the ancient highway. It was a way to curry favor from Roman citizens in villages along the route, built from Rome to Brindisi between 312-191 BC. After achieving greatness in Rome and the far reaches of Gaul, he led armies along this road to battle enemies in Roman civil wars. And then, across the Adriatic Sea, he joined Via Appia's sister road, the Via Egnatia that began in today's Albania. Other armies followed these two roads that eventually connected Rome to Byzantium, today's Istanbul. In the early second century AD, the emperor Trajan charted a new coastal route between Benevento and Brindisi, later called the Via Traiana.

Today, short stretches of the original three roads can be seen in the ruins of ancient Roman cities, now preserved as archaeological wonders, and through the countryside near, and sometimes under, modern highways. Following those routes is the purpose of treading along the path that Caesar and so many others took over the early centuries. Modern eyes, seeing through the mists of more than two thousand years of history, lead the traveler along these three roads coursing through six countries between Rome and Istanbul.
