Summary

The Greek sophist and historian Eunapius flourished in the late fourth century AD and was the author of ‘Lives of Philosophers and Sophists’, a collection of 23 biographies, which is valuable as the only source on Neoplatonism of that period. The text covers figures of personal or intellectual significance, from Plotinus to Chrystanthus, including the remarkable woman, Sosipatra, a Neoplatonist philosopher that lived in Ephesus and Pergamon in the first half of the fourth century. Eunapius also analyses the life and work of Iamblichus and his students.
