Summary

Kidnapping, murder, and prostitution: Eugène Sue’s “The Mysteries of Paris” takes readers into the squalid working-class neighborhoods and underworld of Paris in 1838. Sinister plans are made in the grimy dive bars where the city’s criminals meet, while family dramas play out in the chic salons of the aristocratic upper class, but the facade must be maintained at all costs. The juggernaut that is Paris, with its narrowness, its filth and its omnipresent crimes, brutalizes people. And in the midst of this swamp of the seedy alleys of the urban jungle, a strange savior appears out of nowhere to stand by the helpless and disenfranchised to bring the wicked to justice.

In a total of nearly 2000 pages, a richly detailed and colorful picture of everyday life in Paris in the mid-19th century unfolds. Dozens of characters from different social classes and their stories are interwoven with the main plot thread of the work. Sue combines elements of the detective story, the social novel, and melodrama to create a visually powerful epic of a bygone era, whose revenge motif and intriguing intricacies are at times reminiscent of Alexandre Dumas’ “The Count of Monte Cristo”, which was inspired by Sue.

“The Mysteries of Paris” appeared almost daily as a serialized novel between June 1842 and October 1843 in the Journal des Débats. The newspaper’s publication figures literally exploded, first book versions quickly appeared on the market, and the novel was translated into numerous languages. Sue received numerous letters from enthusiastic readers and critics. He took some of the suggestions they contained into account for the continuation of the story. Today, this tremendous novel has almost fallen into oblivion.

This is the third of six volumes of the monumental work.

Even small towns have their share of secrets…

'So you believed the alleged rapists over the alleged victim?' Jane's voice took on an indignant pitch. 'Girls lie sometimes.' I nodded. 'And rapists lie all the time.'

When Senior Detective Antigone Pollard moves to the coastal town of Deception Bay, she is still in shock and grief. Back in Melbourne, one of her cases had gone catastrophically wrong, and to escape the guilt and the haunting memories, she'd requested a transfer to the quiet town she'd grown up in.
But there are some things you can't run from. A month into her new life, she is targeted by a would-be rapist at the pub, and realises why there have been no convictions following a spate of similar sexual attacks in the surrounding district. The male witnesses in the pub back her attacker and even her boss doesn't believe her.
Hers is the first reported case in Deception Bay, but soon there are more. As Antigone searches for answers, she encounters a wall of silence in the town built of secrets and denial and fear. The women of Deception Bay are scared and the law is not on their side. The nightmare has followed her home.
Chilling, timely and gripping, The Unbelieved takes us behind the headlines to a small-town world that is all too real - and introduces us to a brilliant new voice in crime fiction.

🌀 Hand-spinning instructor and fiber artist Twist Turner is teaching an advanced spinning workshop when the workshop's star student—a notorious fiber hoarder with a competitive streak—is found dead in her studio, tangled in a massive pile of art yarn with suspicious plying patterns. The police suspect a tragic accident, but Twist notices the yarn has been deliberately over-spun and the victim's spinning journal contains coded notes about fiber fraud. With her workshop canceled and the spinning community in a twist, Twist must draft her way to the truth. Assisted by her spinning circle and the handsome textile engineer analyzing twist angles, Twist uncovers a scheme involving fiber substitution, counterfeit exotic blends, and a sophisticated operation diluting luxury fibers with ordinary wool. From suspicious twist consistency that reveals multiple spinners to fiber preparations that don't match the stated materials, every plied strand tells a story. But when Twist discovers the victim was systematically sabotaging other spinners' work to win competitions, she realizes the killer is protecting creative integrity more valuable than any hand-spun skein. With the regional fiber competition approaching and the real fiber fraudster still spinning lies, Twist must ply together the evidence before her own reputation gets permanently wound up in the scandal.
