Summary

Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1936, the American playwright Eugene O’Neill was the first to introduce into the US the drama techniques of realism, associated with Chekhov, Ibsen and Strindberg. His masterpiece, ‘Long Day’s Journey into Night’, is regarded as one of the greatest works of American drama. O’Neill saw the theatre as a valid forum for the presentation of serious ideas. Imbued with the tragic sense of life, he produced a contemporary drama that had its roots in powerful ancient Greek tragedies. This eBook presents O’Neill’s collected works, with numerous illustrations, rare plays and poetry, informative introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material. (Version 1)

In Swansdown, Donald Platt makes a study of life' s inevitable transitions, from love' s astonishing evolutions, to aging and its attendant losses. With the poem " Cloud Study" Platt brings his own mortality into view. Returning to a painting by Constable, he considers his own perspective, sitting by the Liffey, tending an injured knee. Young mothers, lovers, and runners pass, reminding the poet of who he once was and how quickly life, like weather, shifts. " Two minutes later, // The clouds would have taken on a different cast of light and shape / just like the thunderheads / now piling up above the Liffey."

Platt advises: " To approach old age, one needs a new harsher style." And yet these poems are proof of the softness that may follow life' s harshest reckonings, like the wisps of hair on his beloved brother' s head as he lies dying, " fine / as milkweed silk. / His head a split / dried pod whose seeds / wind will scatter." The poems of Swansdown point us to a " larger landscape," they are the clouds " that scud across the blue escutcheon of sky. . . Sun' s blazon through rain rampant."

Mother Night is a hallucinogenic journey across a city with too many alleyways and across a life surviving childhood sexual assault. Forming a nocturnal séance, Serge ♆ Neptune resurrects abusive old lovers and ghosts of the queers of the past – conjures men in cars and men in bedrooms – providing them invitation and shelter, or casting them to stormy waves.
In a book of many types of darkness – across poems of vulnerability and harm – what persists in Mother Night is its celebration of resilience, what shines brightest is the many ways it reaches for the light.
