Summary

"Hollywood Secrets" unveils the complex machinery behind the film and television industry, exploring the power dynamics, the pursuit of stardom, and narrative manipulation that shape our entertainment. The book argues that Hollywood is more than just a dream factory; it’s a high-stakes ecosystem driven by ambition, money, and the constant tension between reality and illusion. Readers will discover how the studio system, once an unyielding force, has evolved alongside the rise of independent filmmakers and streaming platforms, altering the landscape of storytelling and creative control.

The book reveals the often-unseen human cost of fame, where actors and industry professionals grapple with intense competition and relentless scrutiny while striving to maintain carefully crafted public images. Through archival research, interviews, and critical analysis, "Hollywood Secrets" examines how narratives are constructed to influence audiences and perpetuate ideologies, highlighting the industry’s profound impact on culture.

The book begins with an overview of Hollywood’s historical development, then delves into the power structures within studios, the personal stories of those chasing fame, and the manipulation of narratives. Ultimately, it considers the future of the industry in the face of technological advancements and shifting social norms.

Old Truths and New Clichés collects nineteen essays—most of them previously unpublished in English—by Isaac Bashevis Singer on topics that were central to his artistic vision throughout an astonishing and prolific literary career spanning more than six decades. Expanding on themes reflected in his best-known work, the book illuminates in new ways the rich intellectual, aesthetic, religious, and biographical background of Singer's singular achievement as the first Yiddish-language author to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Like a modern Montaigne, Singer studied human nature and created a body of work that contributed to a deeper understanding of the human spirit. Much of his philosophical thought was funneled into his stories. Yet these essays, which Singer himself translated into English or oversaw the translation of, present his ideas in a new way, as universal reflections on the role of the artist in modern society.

Old Truths and New Clichés brims with stunning archival finds that will make a significant impact on how listeners understand Singer and his work. Singer's critical essays have long been overlooked because he has been thought of almost exclusively as a storyteller. This book offers an important correction to the record by further establishing Singer as a formidable intellectual.

"Sweetie, I'm home." I tried to put as much kindness into my voice as possible. I didn't want to have another argument - at least not right away.
    Silence.
    "Sweetheart?"
A gunshot echoed from our bedroom, followed by the sound of a bullet casing skipping along a wall.
    Everything slowed down.
    ***
When a life is destroyed, when guilt says you played a role in its destruction, how do you face the days ahead? Twenty-six-year-old Abel Keogh chooses to ignore the promptings he receives concerning his wife's mental illness, and now he feels he is to blame for her choices. If only he had listened . . .
At some point in our lives, each of us face devastating afflictions and must eventually cope with loss. Regardless of how it happens, the outcome is still the same - we are left isolated, alone, wondering what we could have done differently, and where we can turn for peace. This is Abel's story of love and loss in his own words. His search for peace and the miracle that follows is proof that love and hope can endure, despite the struggles and tragedies that shape each of our lives.

Hannah More was born on February 2nd, 1745 at Fishponds in the parish of Stapleton, near Bristol. She was the fourth of five daughters.
The City of Bristol, at that time, was a centre for slave-trading and Hannah would, over time, become one of its staunchest critics.
She was keen to learn, possessed a sharp intellect and was assiduous in studying. Hannah first wrote in 1762 with The Search after Happiness (by the mid-1780s some 10,000 copies had been sold).
In 1767 Hannah became engaged to William Turner. After six years, with no wedding in sight, the engagement was broken off. Turner then bestowed upon her an annual annuity of £200. This was enough to meet her needs and set her free to pursue a literary career.
Her first play, The Inflexible Captive, was staged at Bath in 1775. The famous David Garrick himself produced her next play, Percy, in 1777 as well as writing both the Prologue and Epilogue for it. It was a great success when performed at Covent Garden in December of that year.
Hannah turned to religious writing with Sacred Dramas in 1782; it rapidly ran through nineteen editions. These and the poems Bas-Bleu and Florio (1786) mark her gradual transition to a more serious and considered view of life.
Hannah contributed much to the newly-founded Abolition Society including, in February 1788, her publication of Slavery, a Poem recognised as one of the most important of the abolition period.
Her work now became more evangelical. In the 1790s she wrote several Cheap Repository Tracts which covered moral, religious and political topics and were both for sale or distributed to literate poor people. The most famous is, perhaps, The Shepherd of Salisbury Plain, describing a family of incredible frugality and contentment. Two million copies of these were circulated, in one year.
In 1789, she purchased a small house at Cowslip Green in Somerset. She was instrumental in setting up twelve schools in the area by 1800.
She continued to oppose slavery throughout her life, but at the time of the Abolition Bill of 1807, her health did not permit her to take as active a role in the movement as she had done in the late 1780s, although she maintained a correspondence with Wilberforce and others.
In July 1833, the Bill to abolish slavery throughout the British Empire passed in the House of Commons, followed by the House of Lords on August 1st.
Hannah More died on September 7th, 1833.

P.G. Wodehouse, the master of British humor, produced dozens of books and hundreds of short stories in his long and prolific career. But none of his creations has quite captured the world's imagination as much as his bumbling, empty-headed, man-about-town Bertie Wooster and Bertie's faithful, knight-in-shining tuxedo Jeeves. Collected here are three of Wodehouse's most beloved "Jeeves and Wooster" tales - including ten short stories from the anthology "Carry On, Jeeves," as well as the complete novels "The Inimitable Jeeves" and "Right Ho, Jeeves" - each a master class in comedic writing. ("Carry On, Jeeves" also features the only Wooster and Jeeves story narrated by Jeeves himself!) Along with Jeeves and Bertie, we are introduced to an entire cast of beloved Wodehouse characters: Madeline Bassett, Bingo Little, James "Corky" Corcoran, Honoria Glossop, Rockmetteller Todd and the terrifying and bombastic Aunt Agatha. These three books are presented here in their original and unabridged form.
