Summary

First Animated Films explores the fascinating origins of animation, revealing how simple drawings and clever inventions sparked a revolution in entertainment. Long before CGI, pioneers experimented with pre-cinema techniques and optical toys like the zoetrope to create the illusion of movement. These early efforts weren't just technological advancements; they were artistic explorations that laid the groundwork for modern visual storytelling.

The book shines a light on figures like Émile Reynaud and Winsor McCay, detailing their innovations and impact on film history. The book argues that early animation's development was a complex mix of independent inventions and artistic experimentation. By analyzing original patents, archival footage, and period publications, the author demonstrates how these formative techniques still influence animation today.

First Animated Films begins with pre-cinematic devices, transitions to key figures in animation, and concludes with an analysis of pioneering films. This approach provides a comprehensive understanding of animation's genesis, making it an invaluable resource for film students, animation enthusiasts and anyone seeking to appreciate the roots of this powerful medium.

22 November 1963: Dallas, Texas. US President John F Kennedy is assassinated as his motorcade passes through the city's streets. The assassin is soon captured, and revealed to be disaffected Communist sympathizer Lee Harvey Oswald. Did Oswald act alone, or did he have help? Is the Bilderberg Group simply a group of international financiers concerned with promoting democracy throughout the world, or is there a more sinister power at work? And what really happened to Princess Diana's Mercedes one warm August night in a Paris underpass?

Conspiracy looks at a range of the most interesting theories of this nature, from the risibly far-fetched, such as the belief that the world is run by the lizard people, to the only-too-true and tragic such as the overthrow and murder of Chilean President Salvador Allende.

    Dark Psychology - Mental...

Why does understanding a psychological risk lead to physical reactions? The answer lies in human anatomy, specifically in the mechanisms behind real pain. Is mental pain comparable to physical pain? How does intense pain manifest? When it comes to physical pain, the process is straightforward. We rarely consider the basic motor reflexes controlled by the spine.

During physical sensation, a nervous impulse is transmitted through the nerves to the corresponding part of the brain, which then sends a response impulse to an organ. But how does mental pain occur? Our bodies possess a self-regulation function for all physiological processes. In essence, the brain responds to changes in the body's chemical processes.

It’s likely that emotions cause some form of change in the body, such as in the blood’s composition. This change is then transmitted to the brain, which sends a response impulse to an organ, resulting in real pain. This phenomenon is known as the psychological cause of real pain.

For example, if you’re afraid of the dark, you might experience discomfort or a choking sensation in your throat. It feels as if something is obstructing your breathing. The fear isn’t of the darkness itself but of what might be lurking within it. This fear is based on information you've gathered throughout your life. A child, for instance, doesn’t fear the dark until they’re told what might be in it. This is what we call conscious fear.

Nancy Bacon who wrote for NBC and David Nivens Four Star Productions. Rounding out our stable of writers was Ted Bryant, news anchor, political analyst and historical scholar.
