  2: Perhaps you have heard of Edgar Allan Poe. Perhaps not. Either way, this 19th-century author has received quite some fame for his works and his unique style. His mystery and gruesome horror stories, comedy, and other genres have reached far into the depths of American literature. 
  3: Jane Austen is well-known for some famous books, among which the popular “Pride and Prejudice.” As an author in the early 1800s, many people may envision pretty dresses and fancy demeanor, but the reality of her life included some hardships as well that may not be so obvious by reading her novels. 
  4: Mark Twain is arguably one of the most famous authors in the United States, with his books Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. His characters were a typical and yet deviant episode of the time period in which he lived, depicting the circumstances under which many people lived. 
  5: Oscar Wilde was a wild one. His statements were bold, his career was successful, and his tongue was sharp. Not only did he disturb the common narrative of the nuclear family, the Catholic church, and the idea of patriotism, but he also blew many people away with his defense of his principles, his criticism on the state, philosophies on life itself, etc. 
  6: William Shakespeare is the celebrated script writer of the most popular plays in the English language. By writing both tragedies, romances, and comedies in the 16th century, he made a name for himself and became successful in the art of drama.

  Anarchism, as both a philosophy and a political movement, seeks to abolish hierarchical structures of power, particularly the state, and promote a society based on voluntary cooperation, mutual aid, and self-governance. The term “anarchy” is often misunderstood and associated with chaos or disorder, but in the context of anarchism, it refers to the absence of coercive authority, not lawlessness. Anarchism challenges the legitimacy of centralized governments, institutions, and systems that perpetuate inequality and domination, advocating instead for decentralized, egalitarian forms of social organization. 
  The roots of anarchism can be traced back to the philosophical and political developments of the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly in the Enlightenment. Thinkers such as William Godwin and Jean-Jacques Rousseau laid the groundwork for anarchist thought by critiquing the rise of centralized authority and envisioning societies based on the autonomy of individuals and communities. However, it was in the 19th century that anarchism began to take shape as a distinct political ideology, largely influenced by the writings and activism of figures like Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, Mikhail Bakunin, and Peter Kropotkin. 
  Central to anarchist theory is the belief in individual freedom and autonomy. Anarchists argue that all individuals should have the right to govern their own lives without interference from external authorities, whether those authorities are political, economic, or social. Anarchism posits that society can function without the need for a state, which is often seen as a coercive and oppressive institution. Instead, anarchists advocate for decentralized forms of governance, such as direct democracy, mutual aid, and voluntary association, where decisions are made collectively by communities rather than imposed by a centralized authority.

  J.B. Rhine (1895 - 1980), widely considered to be the "Father of Modern Parapsychology," was the world’s leading investigator of psychic phenomena, ESP and the paranormal. He founded the parapsychology research lab at Duke University and the Journal of Parapsychology. Dr. Rhine, who coined the term "extrasensory perception" (ESP) to describe the apparent ability of some people to acquire information without the use of the known five senses), wrote several books on ESP and the paranormal. Rhine investigated ghosts, telepathy, poltergeists, and other unseen parapsychology phenomena from 1927 to 1965 at his Duke laboratory, and for several years after that at a private laboratory. In 1901, the two Nakoda bands reluctantly surrendered the 70 square miles granted to them under treaty. It’s just one of more than two dozen surrenders aggressively pursued by the Laurier Liberal government over a fifteen-year period. One in five acres was taken from First Nations.
  		 
  This confiscation was justified on the grounds that prairie bands had too much land and that it would be better used by white settlers. In reality, the surrendered land was largely scooped up by Liberal speculators — including three senior civil servants and a Liberal cabinet minister —and flipped for a tidy profit. None were held to account.
