Sinopse

"Professional Core Values" explores the crucial role of ethics in professional environments, moving beyond simple compliance to foster genuine ethical behavior. By integrating organizational psychology, the book examines the psychological drivers behind ethical and unethical conduct, highlighting how cognitive biases and moral reasoning influence decision-making. The book argues that a values-driven organization, cultivated through ethical leadership and a supportive organizational culture, is more effective than top-down mandates in ensuring workplace ethics.

The book provides practical frameworks for ethical decision-making, including stakeholder analysis, and explores how to build and sustain an ethical organizational culture. It draws upon empirical research, case studies, and surveys to illustrate the impact of ethical failures and successes. For instance, the book analyzes data from proprietary surveys that assess employee perceptions of ethical leadership and organizational support for ethical behavior.

Beginning with fundamental ethical theories, the book progresses through sections on psychological factors, practical frameworks, and creating an ethical organizational culture. It offers actionable strategies for building a values-driven environment, making it an invaluable resource for business leaders, managers, and HR professionals seeking to promote integrity and ethical behavior within their organizations.

At a certain stage in your sales process, your prospect realizes they have a need—ideally due to your exceptional selling skills. As you guide them from recognizing this need through analysis and finally to making a decision, what is on their mind? Consciously or subconsciously, buyers are always weighing the balance of performance, image, and price (PIP). These three factors are perceived differently by each individual, and perceptions can shift over time. In the current economy, it’s crucial to recognize that the relationship between these factors is undergoing significant changes. Marketing must adapt products and messages to align with these shifts, while sales teams need to adjust their presentations, ask new questions, and carefully consider the responses they receive.

So, what are these three principles, and how should they be managed?

Performance – For consumers, the concept of performance is evolving. Consider a consumer’s most significant purchase—a home. The idea that "bigger is better" is no longer valid. Consumers are less willing to endure long commutes in exchange for a large house. While the size of a family may change, the desire for a larger home has diminished. Business buyers are experiencing a similar shift. Product and service claims will be scrutinized more closely, and investments that don’t offer a quick return will be avoided. If you thought businesses were short-sighted before, expect this trend to intensify.

Image – Image remains important, but it’s constantly changing. For consumers, image is increasingly about what a product or service represents to them personally. A homebuyer might choose a smaller house closer to work, but they’ll still want it to reflect their lifestyle. Some images may even become anti-conspicuous. Businesses will also adjust their views on image.

By the 20th century, warfare was nothing new to the European powers, especially when it came to fighting each other. Conflicts had been a mainstay on the European continent for over two millennia. Even after the Napoleonic wars had enveloped Europe in large scale war for nearly 20 years in the 19th century, the Europeans’ imperialism continued unabated. It would take the devastation of World War I to shock Europe and jolt the world’s superpowers out of their imperialistic tendencies.
The final straw came June 28, 1914, when a Serbian assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Austria-Hungary immediately issued ultimatums to Serbia. When they declared war on Serbia July 28, 1914, Russia mobilized for war as well. The Germans mobilized in response to Russia on July 30, and the French, still smarting from the Franco-Prussian War, mobilized for war against Germany. The British also declared war on Germany on August 4. Thus, in the span of one week, six nations had declared war, half of which had no interest in the Balkans.
Needless to say, the First World War came at an unfortunate time for those who would fight in it. After an initial period of relatively rapid maneuver during which the German forces pushing through Belgium and the French and British forces attempting to stymie them made an endless series of abortive flanking movements that extended the lines to the sea, a stalemate naturally tended to develop. The infamous trench lines soon snaked across the French and Belgian countryside, creating an essentially futile static slaughterhouse whose sinister memory remains to this day, but if trench warfare was an inevitability during the war, it is only because the events leading up to the initial battles were quite different.

In the 50 years following the First Crusade, the Latin states in the East were consolidated, but there were also growing tensions and new challenges. Against this backdrop, the fall of the County of Edessa in December 1144 at the hands of Zengi, the atabeg of Aleppo and Mosul, was a catastrophic event. Founded in 1098 by the future King Baldwin of Boulogne, Edessa was the first Crusader state, as well as the northernmost, weakest, and least populated. It was constantly exposed to Muslim attacks, and news of its fall reached Europe at the beginning of 1145, and the fall was the catalyst for the Second Crusade. Furthermore, the Crusader States were also concerned about their relationship with the Byzantine Empire, as relations with the Byzantines were often tense. Indeed, efforts to strengthen and then retake parts of the collapsing Crusader States would fuel subsequent Crusades, and the Fourth Crusade notoriously ended with the Crusaders sacking Constantinople instead of proceeding to Jerusalem.
Naturally, the Fifth Crusade was launched as a result of the Fourth Crusade’s failure to retake Jerusalem, and Pope Innocent III’s goal of reclaiming Jerusalem, which had been lost in 1187, remained unchanged.[1] At the same time, there was a truce between the Kingdom of Jerusalem and the Ayyubid Sultan al-‘Adil I, which was due to expire in 1217. The timing seemed favorable for a new initiative, particularly given the strengthening of Christendom in other regions such as Spain, where the victory at Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212 had secured much of the Iberian Peninsula against the Moors. The turning point for the proclamation of the Fifth Crusade was the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215, where Innocent III established a model for future Crusades, providing the enterprise with consistent legal, liturgical, and fiscal provisions.
