Stories of the Greatest Generation come alive in the hands of longtime local journalist Adrian O'Connor What made the D-Day attack on Omaha Beach so remarkable was that it was carried out largely out by National Guardsman - men of the 29th Infantry Division who had never before seen combat. One of the companies that was part of this historic day hailed from the environs of Winchester, Virginia. Winchester's martial gallantry was hardly restricted to the beaches of Normandy, though. A future city councilor came ashore at Anzio, Italy. A future school principal fought in what may have been the Pacific's toughest battle, Iwo Jima. Local men held the line at the climactic Battle of the Bulge, flew over Europe and the oil fields of Ploesti and even escaped a German prisoner-of-war camp.

Giulia Farnese, a woman who traverses time to find, in this novel, her redemption.
Her real story is tachat of a woman who goes far beyond the figure of Sponsa Christi as she was known throughout the world.
The writer traces the profile of a strong woman who, once free from the trammels of a family that raised her to be obedient, rises from her ashes and the damnatio memoriæ to become the mater and the domina of the feud of Carbognano.
With an absorbing prose, and based on an historical plot of true events, the author gives back to La Bella the dignity that historical documentation has always overlooked, preferring to chase after fifth century gossip.

  • Transformer - A Story of Glitter Glam Rock and Loving Lou Reed - cover

Transformer - A Story of Glitter...

    Simon Doonan

In this funny and poignant memoir and cultural history, the television personality, columnist, and author of Drag pays homage to Lou Reed’s groundbreaking album Transformer on its fiftieth anniversary and recalls its influence on his coming of age and coming out through glam rock.
In November 1972, Lou Reed released his album, Transformer because he thought it was “dreary for gay people to have to listen to straight people’s love songs.” That groundbreaking idea echoed with the times. That same year, Sweden was the first country to legalize gender-affirming surgery, and San Francisco struck down employment discrimination based on sexual orientation.
Sometimes an artistic creation perfectly aligns with a broader social and political history, and Transformer—with the songs “Walk on the Wild Side,” “Perfect Day,” and “Vicious”—perfectly captured its time. “Walk on the Wild Side” was banned on radio across the country but became a massive hit when young people threatened to boycott stations that would not play it. The album's cover featured a high-contrast image of Lou, flaunting a new mascara'd glamrock incarnation, shot by legend Mick Rock, thereby underscoring his intention to create ""a gay album.""
In Transformer, Doonan tells the story of how Lou Reed came to make the album with the help of David Bowie, and places its creation within the course of Reed’s life. Doonan offers first-hand testimony of the album’s impact on the LGBTQ+ community, recalling how it transformed his own life as a 20-year-old working class kid from Reading, England, who had just discovered the joys of London Glam Rock and was sparked by the artistic freedom of Warhol’s The Factory. Transformer was a revelation—hearing Reed’s songs, Doonan understood how the world was changing for him and his friends.
A poignant, personal addition to modern music and LGBTQ+ history, Transformer captures a pivotal moment when those long silenced were finally given a voice. As transgender icon Candy Darling, highlighted in his lyrics, told Reed, “It’s so nice to hear ourselves.”
Supplemental enhancement PDF accompanies the audiobook.
This book would make a great gift for any music lover, LGBTQ+ activist, or history buff looking to learn more about the cultural impact of Lou Reed's Transformer album on the world.

    Adventures in Screenwriting -...

Honest, raw and very funny, Selin Sevinç's musings on the art of screenwriting shine light on the illusive craft which plays such a pivotal role in the movie making process. Inbetween recollecting on her efforts to make unique stories in a industry seemingly interested only in identikit movies, Sevinç blends in darkly amusing tales of homelife and motherhood in Oregon, US, and reminisces on her own childhood growing up in Turkey.
In the latter chapters, Sevinç shares guidance with the reader on how to make thought-provoking and meaningful screenplays. Here the author demonstrates a deep technical knowledge of the screenwriting craft, showing us how Blake Snyder's famous Beat Sheet formula can be used creatively without sacrificing depth and originality.
The saying goes, that art reflects life. As most artists will know, the inner drive to create perfect artistic expression is both a blessing and a curse, and it has never been better articulated than here. In ADVENTURES IN SCREENWRITING, Sevinç will take you on a careering emotional joyride through her creative processes, her pitfalls and breakthroughs, where the boundaries between art and life become blurred.
