Sinossi

mahogany takes its name from the dark wood prized for its durability, workability, and elegant look, and from the Diana Ross movie, whose theme song asks if what lies ahead is what you really want. This book is the third in a trilogy, and like the first two books it is steeped in pop music. Each poem here takes its title from a line of a Diana Ross and The Supremes song, as well as songs from Diana Ross' solo career. Short lines flow down the page like postmodern psalms, connecting dailyness to timelessness, merging the historical and the beloved through reverence for family, music, and the life we actually live. mahogany is a lament for the passing of time and unimaginable loss, and at the same time it models the daily search for joy, and the deep shine that can arise from the darkest times.[sample poem]i'm like a woman who once knew splendor*sometimes i feel like the pink pantherall naked and pinklost in the morass ofdo the best you can todayand nigga heal thy selfour end of winterspirits breaklike old tibetan snowi rememberyou was conflictedand i found myself alonehere on my ancient hurtthe disquieting humof living historydear god, pleaseput my head above my heartwe can only be togetherif the stories are toldplain facesame instrumentjust a couple of coke bottlesfull of gasolinelike god and rainis a waste of timemy mother used to clean housesas a childsome days i can barelyget out of bedin my mindshe's like diana rossscrubbing the white lady's stairsin lady sings the bluesexcept prettierand with green eyesi've just been livingoff of cough dropsand water and angerjust sitting in the whole foodsparking lot eating pineapplei am literallythe definition of "hot mess"pain changes everythingsomebody comeand pick upmy limp bodyoff the groundi am dyinga slow ohio deathwe miss you starmanit's our first sunrise of the burn* "dark side of the world"erica lewis

A new collection from the best and most prolific poets published in the Christian Century over the past twenty-five years.

The 34 poets whose work appears defy the narcissistic tendencies of so much contemporary poetry. They do not necessarily express a particular orthodoxy, but they do connect with something larger than the self. Theirs is poetry that attempts to revitalize language, especially theological language. It is poetry that attempts to upset the usual modes of expression and offers up new angles of vision, especially in regard to biblical stories. For most of the poets—though not all by any means—Jesus is the Word made flesh, and the Incarnation is the paradigm as poets attempt to enflesh the abstract, make the spirit tangible, and put into words the unsayable. Poets have a way of taking on what utterly cannot be done. And those are the poems that should appear in a journal of religious news and reflection.
The poetic approaches and styles of the work of these poets are immensely varied, from the masterful narratives of Sydney Lea to the finely wrought lyrics of Charles Hughes to the always edgy and surprising poems of Bill Stadick to the most imagistic and prolific work of Luci Shaw to the provocative poems of Christian Wiman. Then there are the superb sonnets of Gracia Grindal and Angela Alaimo O'Donnell and the compelling explorations of the deep spirituality of the everyday that comprise Tania Runyan's vision.
The poems in the journal often explore biblical themes, doctrinal issues, or theological conundrums. But many of the poems that appear in the Christian Century present human experience or encounters with the natural world that do not seem on the surface "religious" but reveal a deep humanity at the core. What defines all of these poems is a commitment to communicating with readers seeking truth, beauty, and authenticity.

Disorderly Magic and Other Disturbances is a pop meditation on a number of themes: speed, delirium and distance, disillusion, urbanity, various manifestations of the idea of the wilderness and the wasteland, madness, dissolution, memory, mourning, forgetting, hauntology, hauntings, rapid transits, the non-existent, and conjuring the future. The work mixes magic, culture, mystery, memoir, history, melodrama - it is an invocation, an evocation, with dreamlike freedom of movement between past and present, from personal to universal.

    Poet in New York

    Federico García Lorca

Poet in New York is one of Federico García Lorca's most powerful and visionary works—a haunting, surreal, and emotionally charged poetic exploration of modern urban life. Written during Lorca's stay in the United States between 1929 and 1930, and published posthumously in 1940, this extraordinary collection captures the poet's response to New York City at a time of economic collapse, social unrest, and profound personal transformation.

Arriving in Manhattan during the Great Depression, Lorca encountered a world radically different from his native Spain. The towering skyscrapers, relentless industrialization, racial inequality, and spiritual emptiness of the modern metropolis left a deep impression on him. In Poet in New York, he channels this experience into a series of poems that fuse surrealist imagery with raw emotional intensity. The result is a groundbreaking work that redefined Spanish-language poetry and established Lorca as a visionary voice of the twentieth century.

Through startling metaphors and dreamlike landscapes, Lorca expresses anguish over dehumanization and alienation in a mechanized world. Nature and humanity clash with steel and concrete; innocence struggles against corruption; individuality cries out beneath systems of power and oppression. The poems move fluidly between protest and lament, tenderness and fury, despair and longing for transcendence.

One of the collection's most striking elements is its deep empathy for marginalized communities. Lorca was profoundly affected by the injustices he witnessed, particularly racial discrimination. His poems give voice to suffering and celebrate resilience, revealing his solidarity with those pushed to society's margins. At the same time, the work reflects his own inner conflicts, exploring themes of identity, isolation, and spiritual searching.

Stylistically daring and emotionally fearless, Poet in New York departs from traditional forms and embraces surrealism, fragmentation, and bold experimentation. Lorca's language is vivid, musical, and symbolic, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that mirrors both the chaos of the modern city and the turbulence of the human soul. His imagery—moons, rivers, blood, shadows, and mechanical beasts—forms a powerful symbolic universe that continues to captivate readers and scholars alike.

More than a travel diary or urban portrait, Poet in New York is a prophetic meditation on modern civilization. Its critique of materialism, social injustice, and spiritual emptiness remains startlingly relevant today. At the same time, the collection pulses with lyrical beauty and profound humanity, reminding readers of poetry's power to confront darkness and illuminate truth.

A landmark of twentieth-century literature, Poet in New York stands as one of Lorca's most daring achievements—an unforgettable poetic journey through the heart of the modern world.

Although its commonplace exposure has been somewhat marginalised in today’s often fast-paced lives we all recognise good verse that can empathise with our thoughts or open us up to experience new things in new ways, to better understand and to enjoy the many strands of our lives.
But finding a starting point can be overwhelming, even off-putting, so in this series we offer up our Top 10 classic poets, who brim with talent and verse, on a range of subjects and themes that we can all enjoy.
The United States may be far younger than many nations on Earth, yet its tumultuous history has reaped a harvest of poets and poetry of very fine calibre. In this volume we explore the verse of New England.
