Sinopse

'Speech Craft' offers a comprehensive exploration of public speaking as a learnable skill, dismantling the myth that great speakers are born rather than made. The book builds its framework on three essential pillars: structural composition, delivery mechanics, and audience psychology, creating a methodical pathway for readers to develop their speaking abilities.Through a blend of classical wisdom from ancient orators like Cicero and modern communication research, it presents time-tested principles while addressing contemporary challenges such as virtual presentations and multimedia integration. The book's progression takes readers on a practical journey through the art of public speaking, beginning with fundamental speech architecture and thesis development, moving through crucial delivery techniques like vocal variety and body language, and culminating in advanced audience engagement strategies. What sets this guide apart is its evidence-based approach, incorporating insights from communication studies, psychology, and neuroscience, while maintaining an accessible, instructional tone that speaks to both beginners and experienced presenters. Each chapter builds upon the previous one, offering practical exercises, self-assessment tools, and real-world examples that help readers develop their skills incrementally. The book particularly excels in bridging theoretical knowledge with practical application, addressing modern speaking challenges while emphasizing the importance of authenticity in presentation style. Whether preparing for formal presentations or impromptu remarks, readers gain concrete strategies for crafting and delivering speeches that genuinely resonate with their audiences.

We broke our new series on learning Hungarian down into different learning stages. Start with the “Lower Beginner” books followed by the “Beginner” and “Upper Beginner” books. Next, progress to the “Intermediate” series, then test and reinforce your knowledge with the “Conversations” series.
This audiobook is divided into units. While it provides different learning patterns and accommodates various needs, this audiobook focuses on helping you improve your ability to understand, speak, and memorise Hungarian. The sample will give you a taste of what you can look forward to.
In Unit 1 you will hear Hungarian decoded with each syllable spoken very slowly and clearly with repetition. Immediately before each sentence is spoken, you will hear the translation, so you will always understand what is being said. Unit 2 focuses solely on increasing your listening ability, which will improve your abilities to engage in dialogue with a native Hungarian speaker. This chapter requires you to listen very carefully to nuances in the language.
By Unit 3 you will already notice progress in your abilities to speak and understand Hungarian. The spoken translation is followed by two repetitions in Hungarian at a completely natural speed. While you are learning to process naturally spoken Hungarian, Units 3 and 4 will help you memorise new vocabulary and full sentences. In Unit 5 you can test yourself on how much you have learned. If you are having difficulties, we suggest you revisit the listening, speaking, or memorisation section of Units 1, 2 3 or 4, according to what you need more help with.

Two must-have classics together in one volume, On Writing Well and How to Write a Memoir, from acclaimed writer, editor, and scholar William Zinsser
""On Writing Well is a bible for a generation of writers looking for clues to clean, compelling prose."" –New York Times
On Writing Well, which grew out of a course that William Zinsser taught at Yale, has been praised for its sound advice, its clarity, and for the warmth of its style. It is a book for anybody who wants to learn how to write or who needs to do some writing to get through the day, as almost everybody does. Whether you want to write about people or places, science and technology, business, sports, the arts, or about yourself in the increasingly popular memoir genre, On Writing Well offers you both fundamental principles as well as the insights of a distinguished practitioner. With over a million copies in print, this volume has stood the test of time and remains a valued resource for writers and would-be writers.
Whether you're a professional writer or just want to write a personal or family reminisce, Zinsser explains, in warm anecdotal detail in How to Write a Memoir, how a memoir is different from an autobiography; what makes a good memoir and a bad memoir; how to decide what part of your life to write about, and how to be true to your own personality and voice. Throughout he cites examples from the work of successful memoir writers including Annie Dillard, Frank McCourt, and Eudora Welty, demonstrating how they solved problems of compression, focus, and tone, often overcoming early mistakes that took them in the wrong direction.

Knead to Know - A History of Baking

In Knead to Know: A History of Baking, food historian and chef Neil Buttery takes the reader on a journey exploring the creation, evolution and cultural importance of some of our most beloved baked foods, whether they be fit for a monarch's table, or served from the bakestone of a lowly farm labourer. This book charts innovations, happy accidents and some of the most downright bizarre baked foods ever created.

Everything has a history, but food history is special because it tells so much about our culture and society, our desires and our weaknesses, from the broad sweep of bread creating human civilisation to the invention of the wedding cake, the creation of the whisk, the purpose of the fish heads in a star-gazy pie, or the fact that mince pies used to be meaty.

When we think of the evolution of something, we think every step is an improvement, an incremental elevation toward some peak of perfection as technology improves. This is not always the case. Sometimes things have to become simpler, sometimes knowledge is lost and skills forgotten. As a baker of historical foods, Neil Buttery demonstrates that forgotten recipes and traditional techniques are worth trying out (and mention a few that should perhaps be left in the past).

The reader will be inspired by the characters, creations and inventions of the past to be better and more adventurous bakers.

From the author of TheWordhord:Daily Life in Old English, an audiobook narrated by Isabel Adomakoh Young that takes you on an entertaining tour of Old English words for animals

Many of the animals we encounter in everyday life, from pets and farm animals to the wild creatures of field and forest, have remained the same since medieval times. But the words used to name and describe them have often changed beyond recognition, starting with the Old English word for "animal" itself, deor (pronounced DAY-or). In The Deorhord, Hana Videen presents a glittering Old English bestiary of animals real and imaginary, big and small, ordinary and extraordinary—the good, the bad, and the downright baffling.

From gange-wæfran or walker-weavers (spiders) and hasu-padan or grey-cloaked ones (eagles) to heafdu swelce mona or moon-heads (historians still don't know!), The Deorhord introduces a world both familiar and strange: where ants could be monsters and panthers could be your friend, where dog-headed men were as real as elephants, and where whales were as sneaky as wolves. The curious stories behind these words provide vivid insights into the language, literature, and lives of those who spoke Old English—the language of Beowulf—more than a thousand years ago.

A delightful journey through the weird and wonderful world of Old English, The Deorhord is a magical menagerie of new creatures and new words for the modern englisc reader to discover.
