  When the Colosseum was built in the late 1st century A.D., the Romans, a people known for their architectural acumen, managed to amaze themselves. Martial, a Roman poet writing during the inauguration of the Colosseum, clearly believed the Colosseum was so grand a monument that it was even greater than the other Wonders of the Ancient World, which had been written about and visited endlessly by the Romans and Greeks in antiquity. Indeed, although the Wonders were wondrous to behold, the Colosseum was a spectacular achievement in architecture, something new and innovative, and therefore an amazing “Wonder” in its own way. 
  Of course, the main events in the Colosseum were gladiator fights. Gladiators are somewhat synonymous with ancient Rome, and even thousands of years after they performed on the sands, when people are asked about Roman culture, many think about and refer to the bloody spectacles of men fighting to the death in the arena. Gladiatorial combat is often regarded as barbaric, and most find it very difficult to comprehend how people could have enjoyed watching something so violent, but nevertheless, the spectacle still intrigues and fascinates people today, whether in movies like Gladiator or television shows about Spartacus. 
  Each match usually pitted one type of gladiator against a different type of gladiator, with each having their own kind of armor, weaponry and fighting style. For example, the retiarius was a gladiator that used a net, dagger and trident as his offensive weapons, while only wearing a protective guard over his left arm for protection. The retiarius would typically fight against the secutor, a gladiator armed with a sword, large shield, helmet and protective covering on his right arm and left leg. Therefore, a retiarius sacrificed armor for quickness in battle, while the secutor did the opposite.

  On March 23, 1983, President Ronald Reagan gave an address to the nation from the Oval Office challenging “the scientific community … to turn their great talents … to the cause of mankind and world peace, [and] to give us the means of rendering … nuclear weapons impotent and obsolete.” Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative to protect America from nuclear annihilation was derided by critics as an unworkable Star Wars program, and the Clinton Administration ended the Strategic Defense Initiative in 1993. There is no effective system in place today to protect the American population from incoming missiles from an expanding list of countries with nuclear capabilities. 
  On April 13, 2024, Iran launched, according to Wikipedia, “around 170 drones, over 30 cruise missiles, and more than 120 ballistic missiles toward Israel”. Israel and a coalition of partners, again according to Wikipedia, “destroyed 99 percent of the incoming weapons, most before they reached Israeli airspace.” Damage from the attack was minor. While Israel is protected by an Iron Dome, the United States has no such protection.

  The Muisca Confederation was one of the most sophisticated political entities in pre-Columbian South America, emerging in the highlands of present-day Colombia. The origins of this powerful society can be traced back to the earliest inhabitants of the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes, a region characterized by fertile valleys, cool mountain climates, and abundant natural resources. Over time, these early settlers developed complex social structures, agricultural techniques, and political institutions that would form the foundation of the Muisca Confederation.  
  The first groups to settle in the high-altitude plateaus of the Andean region arrived thousands of years ago, likely migrating from Central America or other parts of South America. These early inhabitants lived in small, semi-nomadic communities, relying on hunting, fishing, and rudimentary farming. As they adapted to their environment, they developed advanced agricultural methods, cultivating maize, potatoes, quinoa, and other crops suited to the high-altitude terrain. The fertile lands and steady supply of food allowed for population growth, leading to the establishment of permanent settlements. 
  As Muisca society evolved, it became increasingly hierarchical, with distinct roles emerging among its members. The transition from small, scattered villages to organized chiefdoms marked a significant turning point in their history. Power began to concentrate in the hands of local leaders, or caciques, who governed their respective communities. Over time, these leaders expanded their influence, forming alliances and asserting control over larger territories. The most powerful of these rulers eventually became the Zipa of Bacatá and the Zaque of Hunza, the two principal leaders who governed the northern and southern regions of the Muisca Confederation.
