Summary

"Storm Legends" explores the intersection of meteorology, mythology, and history to reveal how ancient cultures interpreted and integrated real-world weather events into their storm narratives. By examining myths from regions like the Mediterranean, Mesoamerica, and East Asia, the book identifies the meteorological phenomena that likely inspired them, such as waterspouts mistaken for sea monsters or lightning storms attributed to divine rage. The study of these myths offers insights into early environmental awareness and challenges the notion of myths as purely imaginative creations, suggesting they also functioned as a form of early environmental record-keeping. The book uniquely integrates paleoclimatology data with cultural interpretations, providing a fact-based perspective on how specific weather patterns influenced storytelling. It begins by introducing core meteorological concepts and historical weather observations, then progresses geographically to analyze storm myths, identifying the meteorological phenomena behind them. By connecting Earth Sciences Geography, History World, and religious studies, "Storm Legends" provides a comprehensive understanding of humanity's historical relationship with extreme weather. The book demonstrates how these ancient stories can inform our understanding of current climate challenges.

This book consists of two titles, which are the following:
Galaxies - Galaxies are dynamic entities, constantly evolving through processes like mergers, collisions, and interactions with neighboring galaxies. When galaxies merge, their stars, gas, and dust can undergo dramatic transformations, leading to the formation of new stars and restructuring of the galaxy's shape. These interactions can trigger intense bursts of star formation and feed supermassive black holes at the galaxies' centers, leading to the emission of powerful jets of radiation.
Supermassive Black Hole - Black holes form through various processes that involve the collapse of massive astronomical objects and the merging of smaller black holes. One primary method is the stellar collapse. Stars, during their lifecycle, fuse hydrogen into helium in their cores. When the hydrogen is depleted, they begin fusing heavier elements until iron is produced. For stars more than 20 times the mass of the Sun, the end of this fusion process leads to a supernova explosion. The core of the star collapses rapidly due to gravity, and if the core's mass is sufficiently large (typically more than about three times the mass of the Sun), it will continue collapsing into a singularity, forming a stellar-mass black hole.

With Mountain Madness, Clinton Crockett Peters chronicles his travels and personal transformation from a West Texas evangelical to mountain guide-addict to humbled humanist after a near-fatal injury in Japan's Chichibu Mountains. From 2007 to 2010, Peters lived in Kosuge Village (population nine hundred), nestled in central Japan's peaks, where he was the only foreigner in the rugged town. Using these three years as a frame, this essay collection profiles who he was before Japan, why he became obsessed with mountains, and his fallout from mountain obsession, including an essay on Craig Arnold, the poet who disappeared on a Japanese volcano. Ultimately, the collection asks, how can landscape create and end identities?

In Optimizing Outcomes, pediatric neurologist Dr. Mark Mintz confronts long-held assumptions about the treatment of neurodevelopmental and neurological disorders. He addresses gaps in understanding, the overuse of medication, overutilization of resources and financial waste, and more issues that continue plaguing this area of treatment, specifically regarding children. He explains how many of the behaviors and pathologies currently associated with autism impede independent adult functioning, and that, in turn, early, intensive treatment and intervention can have profound effects on the lives of children and their families. This book is a story about Mintz bridging the gaps in the currently fragmented system of care for patients with autism spectrum disorders and other neurodevelopmental disabilities while adhering to precision and evidence-based medical sciences through his groundbreaking organization, NeurAbilites. Told through the lens of Dr. Mintz’s own experiences with patients, and his deep knowledge in the field, Optimizing Outcomes models a way forward.

Richard Sandler, in his role as personal attorney for Michael Milken during the federal investigations, brings this must-read story of the prosecution to readers for the first time.In this no-holds-barred account, Mr. Sandler shows, with the inclusion of court transcripts and his daily involvement in the investigation, how prosecutors were driven to destroy high-profile figures in the financial industry. This was a strategy that worked to their own personal benefit at the expense of justice. Journalists, always in need of a headline, were hell-bent on demonizing an innocent man whose financing innovation underwrote both the tech and the telecom revolution and gave access to capital for thousands of other small business entrepreneurs and investors. This book presents the reality behind the prosecution of Michael Milken.
