Adam Smith, often hailed as the father of modern economics, revolutionized the field with his pioneering ideas in the 18th century. His significance lies in his formulation of the foundational principles of classical economics, particularly through his seminal works, The Theory of Moral Sentiments and An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations.
In The Wealth of Nations, Smith introduced the concept of the "invisible hand," a metaphor for the self-regulating nature of free markets. He argued that individuals pursuing their self-interest unintentionally contribute to the economic well-being of society, as if guided by an invisible hand. This idea challenged the prevailing mercantilist views of the time, advocating instead for free trade and minimal government intervention in economic affairs.
Smith's exploration of the division of labor highlighted how productivity and efficiency could be vastly improved when tasks are specialized. This principle not only influenced economic theory but also had a profound impact on industrial practices and economic policy.

    Green World - A Tragicomic...

At twenty-three, Michelle Ephraim was failing at everything. The only child of reclusive Holocaust-survivor parents who were dismayed by her literary studies, she found herself dumped by her boyfriend and bombing out of graduate school. Then, one night, she crashed a Shakespeare recitation party. Loopy from vodka and never having read a single line of Shakespeare, she was transfixed. Shakespeare, she decided, was the lifeline she needed.

Green World is the hilarious and heartbreaking story of Ephraim's quest to become a Shakespeare scholar and to find community and home. As she studies Shakespeare, Ephraim's world uncannily begins to mirror the story of the Jewish daughter in The Merchant of Venice, and she finds herself in a Green World, an idyllic place where Shakespeare's heroines escape their family trauma. Green World reckons with global, historical, and personal tragedy and shows how literature—comic and tragic—can help us brave every kind of anguish.

I chose to write this book after moving from Washington to Port Protection, Alaska to start a full-service fishing lodge. I had been asked several times by lodge guests, “What made you sell everything and move to Port Protection, Alaska to start a fishing lodge?” The other question asked most often was about our recipes. This made me feel so proud. I had thought we would be able to hire a cook but realized we couldn’t afford it at the time. I had to do the cooking. I lost sleep. I had to work so hard to find the easiest and best recipes and put a meal plan together, including lunches for our guests to eat on the boats. I kept a journal that I am now sharing.
Patty Mae Gray was born and raised in Seattle, Washington. She grew up fishing, gardening, and investing in real estate.
In 1994, when Patty and her husband were moving to Port Protection, Alaska, she started her first journal. She is currently transforming her journals into novels.
She lives in Arizona with her dog, Lucy and parrot, Mattie.
Her goal is for her readers to enjoy and learn from each of her experiences through her stories.
This is narrated for the author.
