Beschreibung

Greatest Women Athletes explores the remarkable lives and careers of female athletes who have not only achieved greatness in their sports but have also challenged gender norms and inspired social change. The book delves into their relentless pursuit of excellence, showcasing the intense training and mental fortitude required to reach the top. Readers will discover how these pioneering women navigated pervasive sexism and discrimination, often facing ridicule and a lack of resources. Their accomplishments are not just personal victories, but testaments to perseverance against systemic barriers.

This sports biography unfolds in three parts, starting with pioneers like Babe Didrikson Zaharias, a versatile athlete who defied categorization, and Althea Gibson, who broke the color barrier in tennis. It then moves to mid-to-late 20th-century icons such as Billie Jean King, whose fight for equal pay resonated globally, and Nadia Comaneci, whose perfect gymnastics score revolutionized her sport. Finally, the book examines contemporary athletes like Serena and Venus Williams, whose dominance has challenged racial stereotypes.

Drawing from diverse sources, including biographies and statistical data, the book analyzes not only athletic achievements but also the social and cultural forces that shaped these women's lives. By focusing on the intersection of sports, gender, and social justice, Greatest Women Athletes offers a unique perspective on how athletic achievements can catalyze broader societal progress, making it valuable for sports enthusiasts and those interested in women's history and equality in sports.

The first English translation of a German account of the attempt to relieve the Nazis’ Sixth Army at Stalingrad during World War II. In late November 1942, Soviet forces surrounded General Friedrich Paulus’ Sixth Army in a pocket at the Russian city of Stalingrad. In response the Germans planned a relief operation, Operation Winter Thunderstorm, intended to break through the Soviet forces and open the pocket, releasing the encircled units. The 6th Panzer Division was the spearhead of the German relief force. The attack started on 12 December 1942 and was aborted on 23 December after heavy Soviet counterattacks. This failure sealed the fate of the German Sixth Army in Stalingrad. This account of the operation was first published in German in 1956, written by the well-respected military historian and retired German officer, Horst Scheibert, who was a tank commander in 6th Panzer Division during the attempt. Utilizing many excerpts from war diaries, and telegrams sent during operations, it is a unique account of the entire operation from the situation in mid-November through the two German offensives, the Soviet counteroffensive, and ongoing fighting until early January. This book includes 16 maps from the original edition and is the first English translation of this important German account.Praise for On to Stalingrad “Rich and detailed like very few of its kind are, with a crisp writing style and critical eye for the events of the battlefield that almost makes you feel as if you were there with Sixth Panzer. On to Stalingrad is a book so compelling that it simply should not be overlooked for your personal and professional enjoyment.” —ARMOR Magazine “Offers a unique viewpoint from an actual veteran who is able to provide an immediate military analysis of this mostly forgotten operation of the Stalingrad campaign.” —New York Journal of Books

Andy Griffith (1926-2012) is one of North Carolina's most beloved exports, capturing America's heart as Sheriff Andy Taylor. Evan Dalton Smith was born in the North Carolina Piedmont over four decades after Andy, just an hour south of Griffith's hometown of Mount Airy. Both were small-town boys who grew up in similar places, where the counties were dry and the churches plentiful. But for both, there was darkness, crushed hopes, and tragedy, hidden just below the surface.

For Smith and many generations in North Carolina, Andy Griffith was like the air—everywhere, all the time, a part of daily life. Even after he left the state, Smith always felt the pull of home and the lingering ghost of Andy alongside it. This is an exploration on celebrity and the self, on home and what that means when you leave it, and why we love and admire the people we do—even if we've never met them—all told through the entwined lives of iconic actor Andy Griffith and writer Evan Dalton Smith. It is through Smith's telling of Griffith's life that he finds his own story, one that is both informed by and freed from the legacy of one of North Carolina's most famous sons.

Have you ever stopped to wonder how life has been for the people who have been on the frontline of fighting Covid-19 – their experiences, how they are treated, how they are able to cope with the extreme pressure, seeing death everywhere, and risking being infected all the time?
And have you wondered why nurses would be threatening to strike and others even strike in the middle of the pandemic to get a full glimpse of what has really been going on but has gone unreported?
If you’ve answered YES, keep reading...You Are About to Step into a Frontline Nurse’s World For A Moment, To Get A Glimpse Of Just How This Pandemic Has Been Brutal For The Frontline Nurses All Over The World!
The pandemic has been brutal for nurses and other frontline workers. With nurses always dealing with Covid-19 cases every single day, seeing patients in thousands develop moderate to severe symptoms and others dying of Covid-19 related complications, you can agree with me that nurses have really seen the pandemic from a completely different perspective compared to everyone else.
And this perspective hasn’t been one that anyone ‘outside’ could ever imagine.
From extremely long working hours, the scare of getting infected with Covid-19 to the trauma of seeing disease, sickness, and death everywhere to mistreatment by company representatives to being not welcomed by locals, to someone on the outside, the details in this book will literally make you wonder whether what’s in this book is really true.
Written by one of the many traveling nurses who has been to several states and seen it all, from New York to the Mexican border to Illinois and Texas, her account of her experiences in her line of duty will leave you with a new perspective about so many things about the pandemic.
