Summary

Bungee Jumping explores the thrilling intersection of physics, material science, and human experience within this extreme sport. It delves into the science behind free fall and deceleration, explaining how Newtonian mechanics and elasticity are pivotal to a safe jump. The book also examines the composition of bungee cords, detailing their crucial role in energy absorption and the engineering principles that ensure safety. The book uniquely blends theoretical physics with practical applications, demonstrating how these principles directly influence the design and execution of a bungee jump. It progresses systematically, beginning with the physics of free fall, then exploring the materials science of cords, and finally, investigating the physiological and psychological aspects of the jump itself. Readers gain insights into why bungee jumping is not just a thrill-seeking activity, but a calculated interaction with the laws of nature. Ultimately, this book aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of bungee jumping for a broad audience, including students, thrill-seekers, and anyone curious about the science behind extreme sports. By understanding the physics and engineering involved, enthusiasts can engage with the sport with greater awareness and appreciation.

"A refreshingly frank book about the marathon trainer’s mindset." -Kirkus Reviews
"Was running a marathon with my wife a smart idea? Certainly not. We had two kids under the age of three and demanding jobs in tech. However, being smart was not my main concern. In our 4-year marriage, she'd been a rock. She nursed me through leukemia. She picked me up from rehab and drove me to AA. Now, she wanted to run the Disney Marathon. So be it. I signed up like two sports bras, extra supportive!"
Looks Like We're Running is a humorous story about failing badly and getting better. Can running save a person's life? Can it improve a marriage? Overcome an addiction? Each year, nearly 16 million Americans attempt a marathon. Nearly every one of them is just a regular person fighting to discover a better version of themself. Looks Like We're Running is for that person. It was written by that person. This book contains guidance on training, gear, nutrition and recovery, but most importantly, it is a testimony of the marathon's number one lesson: How to keep going.
Dustin Riedesel first attempted running three months after completing chemotherapy for leukemia. He started running seriously eight months later while in a rehab facility for alcohol abuse. Since running began, he lost weight, improved his marriage and friendships, earned freedom from addiction, had two children, bought a new home, received a promotion at work, and finally, wrote this book to serve as a companion for anyone seeking similar outcomes in their life.
Can moving your body for extended periods of time really give you all that? There's one sure-fire way to find out. Put on some shoes. Get out the door. Looks like you're running.

In the early 20th century, one of the most integral members of the criminal underworld was Arnold Rothstein, the archetype of the old school mobster. He was intelligent, charming, well-spoken, grotesquely wealthy, and a sharp dresser, often pictured with a patterned bowtie and a flat-top fedora snugly fit over his receding hairline. And yet, he was nothing like the stereotypical mobster; Arnold was not a drinker or smoker, and he was not one to be tempted by illicit substances. He was a notorious high roller, with pockets holding wads of $100 bills, but to the casual eye, he was just another dapper, well-mannered gentleman who frequented the tracks and casinos after a long day at the office.
Today, Rothstein is remembered for his murky association with the most notorious event in the history of American sports: the fixing of the 1919 World Series by the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox were favored 5:1 to beat the Cincinnati Reds, and for the first time since 1903, the Series would be a best-of-nine format. However, at a time when players were treated as second class, some sought a payday beyond what they made in the leagues, and the White Sox players were some of the most poorly paid in the league. The owner of the team, Charles A. Comiskey, was one of the cheapest owners in the game.
Around two weeks before the World Series, Chicago first baseman Chick Gandil met with a gambler in his Boston hotel room. During that meeting, Gandil told Joseph Sullivan that for $100,000, he and other members of the White Sox were willing to take a dive and make sure that the Reds won the World Series. Gandil was able to convince the team’s top two pitchers to go along with the plan, as well as five other players. With that, the plan to throw the World Series was put in motion, and rumors began to spread around the country prior to the start of the series as gamblers wagered large sums of money on the Reds.

Join Mick Hubert, Voice of the Gators, as he relives, through radio high-lights, the 1993-94 Gator football and basketball seasons – a year which saw the University of Florida climb to the top of collegiate athletic programs. Capturing a second consecutive SEC Eastern Division title, the Florida Gators avenged a loss to Alabama the year before by beating the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game and earning a berth in the Sugar Bowl. Along the way, the Gator scored more points, totaled more yards and passed for more touchdowns than any team in conference history. Against undefeated West Virginia, the Gators rolled to a 41-7 Sugar Bowl win, for a school-record eleventh victory and a #5 ranking in the final AP poll. The Florida basketball team began the 1993-94 season largely unheralded, but shocking critics and fans alike, marched to victory after victory leaving in their wake major powers Kentucky, Texas and Oklahoma State. On their way to a school-record 29 victories, the Gators become SEC Eastern Divisions CO-Champions, SEC Tournament Runner-ups and ranked #14 in the final AP poll. Seeded a #3 in the NCAA Tournament, Florida defeated James Madison and Pennsylvania, stunned UConn and rallied against Boston College to capture the East Regional Title. They had, in fact, “ Found A Way” to the final Four… It was A year To Remember!
