  An author’s ideas are his building blocks, his architecture of the mind, building a structure on which all else will rest; the narrative, the characters, the words - those few words that begin the adventure. 
   
  In this series we look at some of our leading classic authors across two genres: the short story and the poem.  In this modern world there is an insatiable need to categorise and pigeon-hole everyone and everything.  But ideas, these grains and saplings of the brain, need to roam, to explore and find their perfect literary use vehicle.   This  poetic book tells the story of David, a farmer born in 1960s Australia who was expected to carry on his family’s traditions on the land. We follow his life from birth to an imagined death, spanning a turbulent time when small rural communities across Australia collapsed.
   
  David’s  plans are upended in the 1990s as the country suffers deregulation of the grain markets and the onset of a devastating ten-year drought. He and farmers like him have their lives forever changed, swept away by harsh economic forces and drought as family farms shut down.
   
  The  book captures in verse the destruction of a cherished way of life for David, his neighbours, and rural towns. It recounts the tragedy of dreams broken when long-held farming traditions become unsustainable. By  telling one man’s story, it memorializes the wider loss of community 
  and livelihood faced by farming families across Australia in recent decades.

She holds a BA from DePauw University and a graduate degree from Vanderbilt University. She has worked as a teacher at the junior high level and at the university level. Other full and part-time work includes church organist, editor, choir member, craftsperson, pianist, student of the cello, hands-on healer, and--though this doesn't count as work--avid reader. She has written children's and adult books, recorded audiobooks, and had two books published, Hesitating At The Gate and Fast and Fearless Cooking: A Cookbook of Ideas and Techniques Rather Than Recipes. Mother of three and grandmother of five, Ann lives in Toronto.
