Summary

Elizabeth Gaskell's "Ultimate Collection" presents an expansive anthology of her literary works, showcasing her keen social insight and masterful storytelling. This compendium features an array of novels, short stories, and essays that explore themes of industrialization, class disparity, and the complexities of human relationships in 19th-century Britain. Gaskell's prose is characterized by its rich detail and profound empathy, often illuminating the struggles of the working class while also delving into the subtleties of domestic life. As a significant voice of the Victorian era, Gaskell's writing reflects the prevalent societal tensions and advances the conversation on gender roles and moral responsibility, making it essential reading for those interested in the historical context of her time. Gaskell, an author and biographer, was closely connected to the social issues of her day, with her experiences in Manchester's industrial landscape shaping her narratives. Growing up amid the stark contrasts of wealth and poverty, along with her friendships with prominent literary figures such as Charles Dickens, fueled her passion for social change through literature. Her position as a female author in a male-dominated field further inspired her to advocate for the voiceless, ensuring her works resonate with authenticity and relevance. Readers seeking to understand the intricate tapestry of Victorian society will find Gaskell's "Ultimate Collection" an indispensable resource. Her unique perspective, eloquent prose, and ability to capture the essence of the human experience make this anthology not only an exploration of literary greatness but also a compelling commentary on the social fabric of her time. This collection is highly recommended for both literature enthusiasts and those interested in the dynamics of 19th-century British society.

The Showa Era began on December 25, 1926, with the ascension of Emperor Hirohito following the death of his father, Emperor Taisho. This period marked a critical turning point in Japan’s history, as the nation transitioned from the political turbulence of the Taisho democracy to a time of increasing militarism and nationalist sentiment. Although the early years of the Showa Era were characterized by economic struggles and political instability, they also set the stage for Japan’s dramatic expansion and eventual involvement in global conflict.
Emperor Hirohito’s rise to the throne was met with both hope and uncertainty. Many saw him as a symbol of continuity and strength, while others were concerned about the growing influence of the military in governmental affairs. Unlike his father, whose reign was defined by a parliamentary democracy, Hirohito’s early years as emperor witnessed the gradual erosion of democratic institutions. The shift toward a more authoritarian government was driven by widespread dissatisfaction with the parliamentary system and the belief that Japan needed strong leadership to navigate domestic and international challenges.
One of the most pressing issues Japan faced at the beginning of the Showa Era was economic instability. The global economy had already begun to weaken, and in 1929, the Wall Street Crash sent shockwaves through Japan’s financial system. The economic downturn led to mass unemployment, factory closures, and widespread poverty, exacerbating social tensions. Farmers, who made up a significant portion of Japan’s population, suffered greatly as the price of rice plummeted, leading to rural hardships that fueled growing resentment toward the government. In response, nationalist and ultraconservative factions gained popularity, advocating for territorial expansion as a means to secure resources and economic stability.

Profit, Loss, and Miracles is the riveting true story of a woman who rose from her deathbed to wage a courageous legal war against a corrupt insurance giant and its allies within state government. It is a chronicle of a multi-billion-dollar machine that tried to silence her family—and the astonishing power of ordinary people who refused to be broken.
Those who stood with Gabby—whistleblowers in government, medical heroes, fearless attorneys, a dogged journalist, and even an American icon—paid a steep price. Reputations were destroyed. Careers were threatened. Some defenders of the system were rewarded handsomely for their compliance.
But among the unexpected champions was Frank Borman II, Commander of Apollo 8, the first mission to orbit the Moon. Gabby and her husband had never met him. Yet through a remarkable twist of fate, this legendary astronaut helped make her life-saving transplant possible.
With key figures now gone, the full story—once too dangerous to tell—can finally be revealed.
In the tradition of A Civil Action and Erin Brockovich, Profit, Loss, and Miracles is a powerful, inspiring narrative of courage vs. corruption, family vs. bureaucracy, and the breathtaking moment when justice triumphs over greed.

Carl Moellenberg's story is one of overcoming enormous obstacles and changing course to find his passion and his true self to live joyously as a long-term survivor. It is a journey of many transformations: from Midwestern boy most interested in music to a fast-paced Wall Street career; from investment banking to a 13-time Tony Award winner on Broadway; from overcoming several death-defying crises by finding healing, inspiration from a higher being, and deeper spirituality. Carl hopes that his story will inspire others who face seemingly overwhelming obstacles to find their passion, their reason to live and to find love.
