The droughts, combined with an inefficient agricultural system, led to widespread food shortages, particularly in the rural areas where most of the population lived. In the cities, food prices soared, making it even more difficult for the poor to survive. As the crisis deepened, people were forced to resort to extreme measures for survival, including selling their children into slavery or fleeing to other regions in search of food.
