Summary

"Cheetah vs Leopard" offers a fascinating scientific exploration of two of Africa's most remarkable big cats, examining how their distinct evolutionary paths have shaped their physical characteristics and hunting strategies.Through meticulous research and field observations, the book reveals how these frequently confused predators have developed entirely different approaches to survival in African ecosystems, from their physical adaptations to their hunting techniques. The analysis progresses logically from evolutionary origins to detailed anatomical comparisons, showcasing the cheetah's speed-oriented adaptations—including its lightweight frame and specialized semi-retractable claws—against the leopard's power-focused features, such as its muscular build and climbing abilities. The book's systematic comparison approach, supported by GPS tracking studies and high-speed video analysis, illuminates how these differences influence their hunting success rates and territorial behaviors. Particularly intriguing is the examination of how each species' unique characteristics affect their interaction with prey populations and their broader ecological roles. What sets this work apart is its comprehensive integration of multiple scientific disciplines, from biomechanics to conservation biology, presented through clear explanations and detailed illustrations. The book maintains scientific rigor while remaining accessible to both specialists and educated enthusiasts, offering practical applications for wildlife management and field identification. This thorough examination of two successful but contrasting predatory strategies provides valuable insights into the diversity of evolutionary adaptations in African ecosystems.

Dogopolis presents a surprising source for urban innovation in the history of three major cities: human-canine relationships.

Stroll through any American or European city today and you probably won’t get far before seeing a dog being taken for a walk. It’s expected that these domesticated animals can easily navigate sidewalks, streets, and other foundational elements of our built environment. But what if our cities were actually shaped in response to dogs more than we ever realized?

Chris Pearson’s Dogopolis boldly and convincingly asserts that human-canine relations were a crucial factor in the formation of modern urban living. Focusing on New York, London, and Paris from the early nineteenth century into the 1930s, Pearson shows that human reactions to dogs significantly remolded them and other contemporary western cities. It’s an unalterable fact that dogs—often filthy, bellicose, and sometimes off-putting—run away, spread rabies, defecate, and breed wherever they like, so as dogs became a more and more common in nineteenth-century middle-class life, cities had to respond to people’s fear of them and revulsion at their least desirable traits. The gradual integration of dogs into city life centered on disgust at dirt, fear of crime and vagrancy, and the promotion of humanitarian sentiments. On the other hand, dogs are some people’s most beloved animal companions, and human compassion and affection for pets and strays were equally powerful forces in shaping urban modernity. Dogopolis details the complex interrelations among emotions, sentiment, and the ways we manifest our feelings toward what we love—showing that together they can actually reshape society.

Most people believe that they were either benefited or at least not harmed by being brought into existence. Thus, if they ever do reflect on whether they should bring others into existence—rather than having children without even thinking about whether they should—they presume that they do them no harm. Better Never to Have Been challenges these assumptions. David Benatar argues that coming into existence is always a serious harm. Those who never exist cannot be deprived. However, by coming into existence one does suffer quite serious harms that could not have befallen one had one not come into existence. Drawing on the relevant psychological literature, the author shows that there are a number of well-documented features of human psychology that explain why people systematically overestimate the quality of their lives and why they are thus resistant to the suggestion that they were seriously harmed by being brought into existence. The author then argues for the "anti-natal" view—that it is always wrong to have children—and he shows that combining the anti-natal view with common pro-choice views about fetal moral status yield a "pro-death" view about abortion. Although counter-intuitive for many, that implication is defended, not least by showing that it solves many conundrums of moral theory about population.

In Israel and the Cyber Threat, Charles D. ("Chuck") Freilich, Matthew S. Cohen, and Gabi Siboni provide a detailed and comprehensive study of Israel's cyber strategy, tracing it from its origins to the present. They analyze Israel's highly advanced civil and military cyber capabilities and organizational structures to offer insights into what other countries can learn from Israel's experience. To achieve this, they explore how and why Israel has been able to build a remarkable cyber ecosystem and turn itself, despite its small size, into a global cyber power. The book further examines the major cyber threats facing Israel, including the most in-depth look at Iranian cyber policies and attacks; Israel's defensive and offensive capabilities and the primary attacks it has conducted; capacity building; international cooperation; and the impact of Israel's strategic culture on its cyber prowess. By placing Israel's actions in the realm of international relations theory, the book sheds light on many of the major questions in the field regarding cyber policies.
