Summary

Three very different people didn't wake up one Tuesday morning in April expecting their lives to change forever. Matt Benson was a handsome EMT with a good job and a lonely life. Justine Duchane was a broken hearted woman who had given up on the world and spent her days spouting a political column for the local paper. Hal Urban was failed writer who had hidden so far in the bottle and sports reporting he had forgotten who he was. Then it all changed. They met.

What is the nature of love? Can you fall in love with two men completely and deeply in too totally different ways? Are Justine and Matt destined for true love? The friendship she develops with Hal makes her a politician and him a playwright again. The two of them are better people, in fact. The joy of that summer with Matt is more than any woman could ask for. Would, could and should she choose one of them?

Benji is an imaginative eight-year-old boy, living with his parents in a mining village in Nottinghamshire amidst the spoil heaps and chip shops that characterise the last industrially bruised outposts of the Midlands, just before Northern England begins. His family are the eccentric neighbours on a street where all the houses are set on a tilt, slowly subsiding into the excavated space below. Told through Benji's voice and a colourful variety of others over a deeply joyful and strange twelve-month period, it's a story about growing up, the oddness beneath the everyday, what we once believed the future would be, and those times in life when anything seems possible.
1983 is steeped in the distinctive character of a setting far weirder than it might at first appear: from robots living next door, and a school caretaker who is not all he seems, to missing memories and the aliens Benji is certain are trying to abduct him.

A college party lands freshman Hal Christianson in an America that could have been: no smartphones, no cars, no flush toilets. What he finds is a squabbling bunch of states, the consequence of the colonies having grown up on their own after European civilization collapsed from plague in the 1670s, and they are poised on the brink of war.
For a socially awkward young man, who takes refuge in online games, this is a bad situation. All he wants is to go home, but he has no knowledge or experience that is useful. He has only one skill of value in a world where the rifle is a new invention - he is a competitive fencer.
Fencing may not be enough with the perils he faces. There are stories about people who appear, magically, as if from nowhere. They are caught and killed. The land Hal finds himself in is about to be consumed by revolution and war. As if the situation were not bad enough, for the first time in his life, Hal has fallen in love.
Can Hal grow up fast enough to survive in this world? Is there really a way home for him? If one exists, will he take it?
"A rousing what-if look at a decidedly different America persuasively stuck in a historical past." - Kirkus Reviews
