Summary

"I believe that it is as much a right and duty for women to do something with their lives as for men and we are not going to be satisfied with such frivolous parts as you give us.” – Louisa May Alcott, Rose in Bloom

A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history’s most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors’ American Legends series, readers can get caught up to speed on the lives of America’s most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.

Louisa May Alcott (1832 – 1888) was one of the best authors of her day, but even though she’s remembered primarily for being a late 19th century novelist, she was also a progressive Transcendentalist. Though Alcott is not as well known as writers like Thoreau and Emerson, and she lacked the advocacy work of women like Susan B. Anthony, she used her pen to help push for change on the foremost social issues of the day, including gender equality and abolition.

Alcott managed to make semi-autobiographical works popular among audiences of all ages. Her most critically acclaimed work is Little Women, a multi-volume look at life inside her own house in Concord, Massachusetts, with the protagonists modeled after Alcott and her sisters. The series was both breezy but serious, offering a glimpse at the various aspects of life for 19th century women coming of age. One contemporary reviewer called Little Women "the very best of books to reach the hearts of the young of any age from six to sixty.”

Alcott also used her experiences serving as a nurse for six weeks during the Civil War at a Union Hospital in Georgetown, after which she compiled her letters to create Hospital Sketches. In that work, Alcott managed to use her unique style of humor to address the serious problems she encountered working as a nurse during the war.

American Legends: The Life of Louisa May Alcott examines the life and work of the well-regarded author. Along with pictures of important people, you will learn about Louisa May Alcott like you never have before, in no time at all.

Celebrated yogi Reema Datta adapts her world-renowned 12-week course into book format: an accessible and practical method for attaining mental and emotional well-being, physical health, and spiritual nourishment that combines the ancient wisdom and practice of yoga with cutting-edge science and solutions to the challenges of modern life

Born into a family of yogis and reared in India and the US, Reema Datta has been steeped in yogic tradition her entire life. She learned that the wisdom of yoga provides precise guidance on how to create a strong, stable, and resilient mind, but when she looked at the current state of yoga, she mainly saw a focus on the physical aspects of postures and breathwork. She set out to change that approach and created The Yogi’s Way, a holistic curriculum to help readers experience lasting peace, connection to purpose, and freedom from the mind’s destructive tendencies.

Datta’s 12-week course is based on the in-person curriculum she has used with her celebrity students, their families, and thousands of other followers. It offers a specific sequence of movement, meditation, visualization, breathwork, awareness practices, and wisdom to cultivate emotional resilience and enable readers to face and move through fear, anger, shame, anxiety, depression, attachment, jealousy, and loneliness. Written from the perspective of a woman, the book offers a welcome alternative to the tradition of ancient texts and methods that largely represent male perspectives.

The weekly lessons and practices, rooted in yogic wisdom, cutting-edge science, and the realities of modern life, include:

    • an exploration of the foundations of The Yogi’s Way: motivation, stories, choices, vision, and nourishment
    • the twelve Pillars: community, breath, healthy thoughts, mantra, meditation, visualization, movement, rest, journaling, communication, nutrition, and service
    • the Heal Yourself Now™ yoga sequence, which can be practiced in a variety of settings

By following The Yogi’s Way, readers will do more than build a strong mind and body—they will awaken their creative potential and learn to follow and fulfill their own life purpose.

Ousted from power by the French army on April 11, 2011, following the disputed presidential election in Côte d'Ivoire of November 2010, Laurent Gbagbo was charged with crimes against humanity before the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, on December 5, 2011.

This book, written from 2012 onwards, thanks to numerous prison visits and interviews, is the only one to have been produced with the participation of the Ivorian president during his incarceration and trial.
This unique testimony is more than ever a document for history, because it sheds light on the manipulations of the 2010 elections, the collusion between Nicolas Sarkozy's France and the ICC to get rid of Laurent Gbagbo, and the stalling tactics and maneuvers that marred "Gbagbogate."
Over meetings with François Mattei, Laurent Gbagbo looks back on his seven years in prison, explains what they mean and shares his vision for the future—that of a free man, come what may.

The legendary tale of Ernest Shackleton's grueling Antarctic expedition, recounted in riveting first-person detail by the captain of HMS Endurance.

"You seriously mean to tell me that the ship is doomed?" asked Frank Worsley, commander of the Endurance, stuck impassably in Antarctic ice packs. "What the ice gets," replied Sir Ernest Shackleton, the expedition's unflappable leader, "the ice keeps." It did not, however, get the ship's twenty-five crew members, all of whom survived an eight-hundred-mile voyage across sea, land, and ice to South Georgia, the nearest inhabited island.

First published in 1931, Endurance tells the full story of that doomed 1914-1916 expedition and incredible rescue, as well as relating Worsley's further adventures fighting U-boats in the Great War, sailing the equally treacherous waters of the Arctic, and making one final (and successful) assault on the South Pole with Shackleton. It is a tale of unrelenting high adventure and a tribute to one of the most inspiring and courageous leaders of men in the history of exploration.
