The epic battle that turned the tide of the Civil War is vividly recounted in the words of soldiers and civilians who experienced it. The Battle of Gettysburg is perhaps the most famous conflicts of the American Civil War. Over the course of three brutal and bloody days in July of 1863, Confederate General Robert E. Lee attempted an invasion of the north, which was in the end successfully repelled by Major General George Meade’s Army of the Potomac.   Though this epic battle has been minutely studied, Witness to Gettysburg offers a new perspective. Historian Richard Wheeler tells the story in both historical and human terms, almost entirely through the words of participants, both soldier and civilian, male and female.   The technical statements in these firsthand accounts have been checked against official records and the personal stories have been verified as credible. Through this process, Wheeler has produced a war narrative that is both immediate and authoritative.

As a member of the "New Thought" movement, Henry Harrison Brown (1840 - 1918) founded the periodical "NOW". In this magazine, he first published his most famous essay "Dollars want me!" Brown presented positive affirmations which inevitably attract money and financial independence. Easy, concise, to the point: Brown states that without man, money is nothing. Therefore, money seeks man to fulfill its duty. All man needs to do is to prepare mentally - and financial freedom will be the result. Extremely interesting and highly entertaining!

In terms of geopolitics, perhaps the most seminal event of the Middle Ages was the successful Ottoman siege of Constantinople in 1453. The city had been an imperial capital as far back as the 4th century, when Constantine the Great shifted the power center of the Roman Empire there, effectively establishing two almost equally powerful halves of antiquity’s greatest empire. Constantinople would continue to serve as the capital of the Byzantine Empire even after the Western half of the Roman Empire collapsed in the late 5th century. Naturally, the Ottoman Empire would also use Constantinople as the capital of its empire after their conquest effectively ended the Byzantine Empire, and thanks to its strategic location, it has been a trading center for years and remains one today under the Turkish name of Istanbul.
The end of the Byzantine Empire had a profound effect not only on the Middle East but Europe as well. Constantinople had played a crucial part in the Crusades, and the fall of the Byzantines meant that the Ottomans now shared a border with Europe. Indeed, the Ottomans would clash with Russians, Austrians, Venetians, Polish, and more before collapsing as a result of World War I, when they were part of the Central powers.
In the wake of taking Constantinople, the Ottoman Empire would spend the next few centuries expanding its size, power, and influence, bumping up against Eastern Europe and becoming one of the world’s most important geopolitical players. It was a rise that would not truly start to wane until the 19th century. Preserving its mixed heritage, coming from both its geographic position rising above the ashes of the Byzantine Empire and the tradition inherited from the Muslim Conquests, the Ottoman Empire lasted more than six centuries.

    Jihad and Genocide

A study of Islamic fundamentalism, its violent and deadly history, and the questions it raises today. This book examines the relationship between jihad and genocide, past and present. Richard L. Rubenstein takes a close look at the violent interpretations of jihad and how they have played out in the past hundred years, from the Armenian genocide through current threats to Israel. Rubenstein’s unflinching study of the potential for fundamentalist jihad to initiate targeted violence raises pressing questions in a time when questions of religious co-existence, particularly in the Middle East, are discussed urgently each day. Praise for Jihad and Genocide“Provocative, important reading for all interested in Arab-Israeli peace and religious coexistence worldwide. Highly recommended.” —Choice Reviews“Rubenstein’s analysis stands the test of time. Thus, attention must be paid to Rubenstein's new work, Jihad and Genocide, which offers a searing analysis of Islamic thought and bleak predictions of its impact. Even those of us who do not share his pessimism, his sense of the inevitability of the path to genocide and war, or his predilection for the political right, must confront the issues he raises.” —Foreword Reviews

At the core of this debut collection is a question – what is worth holding onto?
Through poetic experiments that blend the academic and the artistic, Rhiya Pau queries complex characters and tender landscapes. Routes journeys from Ba's kitchen in Sonia Gardens to Independence hour in Delhi, across the pink shores of Nakuru, to meet a painter on Lee High Road.
Celebrating fifty years since her community arrived in the UK, Pau chronicles the migratory histories of her ancestors and simultaneously lays bare the conflicts of identity that arise from being a member of the East African-Indian diaspora. In this multilingual discourse exhibiting vast formal range, Pau wrestles with language, narrative and memory, daring to navigate their collective fallibilities to architect her own identity.
'[Routes]...holds up to the light the wisdom of the past, and asks what else is passed down along with it...a work of humane intelligence, formal experiment and linguistic verve' - Sarah Howe, Judge of Eric Gregory Awards 2022
