🧵 Quilt shop owner and fabric cutter Cora Cutwell is hosting a fat quarter frenzy sale when the store's most demanding customer—a notorious fabric hoarder—is found dead in her shop, buried under a collapsed display of premium fat quarters. The police suspect a tragic accident, but Cora notices the fabric bolts have been deliberately cut to weaken the display and the victim's purchase history shows suspicious patterns of fabric accumulation. With her shop temporarily closed and the quilting community in an uproar, Cora must measure up as an investigator. Assisted by her cutting team and the handsome textile engineer analyzing fabric stress points, Cora uncovers a scheme involving short-measured fabric, counterfeit designer prints, and a black market for stolen quilt shop inventory. From suspicious cutting patterns that reveal intentional waste to selvage edges that don't match manufacturer specifications, every quarter yard tells a story. But when Cora discovers the victim was systematically reselling stolen fat quarters online at inflated prices, she realizes the killer is protecting small quilt shops from a fabric fencing operation. With the annual quilt show approaching and the real thief still cutting corners, Cora must square away the evidence before her own business gets permanently cut from the bolt.

An engineer, Victor Hatherley, attends Dr Watson's surgery after his thumb is chopped off, and recounts his tale to Watson and Holmes. Hatherley had been hired for 50 guineas to repair a machine he was told compressed Fuller's earth into bricks. Hatherley was told to keep the job confidential, and was transported to the job in a carriage with frosted glass, to keep the location secret. He was shown the press, but on closer inspection discovered a "crust of metallic deposit" on the press, and he suspected it was not being used for compressing earth. He confronted his employer, who attacked him, and during his escape his thumb is chopped off. Holmes deduces that the press is being used to produce counterfeit coins, and works out its location. However, when they arrive, the house is on fire, and the criminals have escaped.
