Summary

To anyone who believes that making it to the mountaintop is an impossible dream, here is the author’s challenge: “Oh, Yeah? Watch This!” In his intriguing memoir, Lloyd Edward “Ed” Allen Jr., a retired Navy Rear Admiral, corporate vice president and executive coach, tells the story of the making of a man. After a boyhood of loss, abuse and loneliness, Allen became a Naval Flight Officer and flew in F-4s and F-14s from eight different carriers. Later he commanded an aircraft carrier and was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral. Along the way, he also was on a journey of self-discovery: Who was the real Ed Allen? On one level, this book is about a man who experienced extraordinary success in three different careers. On another, it is about a boy in search of a family. From the valleys to the mountaintops, is a story of determination, overcoming, forgiveness, and closure—and a deep dive into what it means to be human.

Shocking True Crimes can happen in Your Street.

From acclaimed true crime author and podcaster Emily Webb comes a gripping collection of chilling cases from Australia and beyond. This volume delves into both well-known and obscure crimes, revealing the dark underbelly lurking beneath seemingly peaceful neighbourhoods.

In 1977, the murder of an Australian nurse living in Texas shocked the community and remains unsolved to this day. In 1950, the disappearance of a Melbourne woman led to the largest search of its time, only for her husband to later confess to disposing of her body under dubious circumstances.

The book also examines decades of baby abductions from hospitals, suburban homes, and public streets, highlighting the vulnerability of the most innocent among us. The still-unsolved murder of elderly "gentleman grocer" Frank Newbery in Newcastle serves as a chilling reminder of the darkness that can lurk in the most familiar places.

In the 1950s, a cricket match in suburban Adelaide turned into a scene of terror when a gunman opened fire, fatally shooting one player and injuring another. In 1973, during a bustling football game at Adelaide Oval, 11-year-old Joanne Ratcliffe and 4-year-old Kirste Gordon vanished without a trace, their disappearances haunting the community to this day

Murder in the Suburbs is a compelling reminder that even the most tranquil street can harbor dark secrets. These true accounts will leave you questioning the safety of the world just outside your door.

‘Webb certainly whets the appetite for more reading around these cases … A solid addition to any true crime lover’s bookshelf.’ GLAM

‘Her telling of a range of tales reads as factual, careful and very considered … That doesn't mean that she shies away from explaining what happened to many of these victims, it, fortunately, lacks the sensationalism that can sometimes be found in these sorts of accounts.’ AustralianCrimeFiction.org

Abandoned by his father, orphaned by twelve, and left to navigate a world that seemed determined to cast him aside, Andy's early years were a relentless struggle for survival. Homeless and hungry, he battled against the odds, finding solace in the rare kindness of strangers and the rebellious spirit that refused to let him sink.
But Andy's story is not just one of hardship - it's a tale of resilience, transformation, and unexpected success. With humour and unflinching honesty, he takes readers on a journey from the streets of Dublin to the bright lights of the adult entertainment industry, proving that no matter where you come from, you can carve out your own destiny.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

In this tumultuous century world wars will shatter all of Europe and Britain will finally be forcible divorced from Catholic Ireland. Revolution and economic disaster are followed by a society that appears more equal, growing in confidence and its authors use every morsel of debate to create excellent literary works.

'If you made me angry, to me, for that anger to go away, I have to get hold of you ... I have to do something to you.'
'I didn't feel myself. I felt numb, like a zombie, like a switch had been flicked and a light had gone off.'
These are the words of some of South Africa's most terrifying serial killers, who spoke to psychologist Brin Hodgskiss in the bowels of the country's most secure prisons.
Hodgskiss interviewed several of the most notorious serial killers and his recordings sat gathering dust until recently, when top true-crime podcaster Nicole Engelbrecht found his research online. The two connected and now they bring their love of storytelling to this highly readable book.
In Killer Stories, Hodgskiss combines his interviews with the tenets of narrative psychology to take the reader into the minds of the killers and shares with us the ways in which his own journey as a psychologist and human being contributed to his deeper understanding of them. The book intertwines the killers' versions of the truth and the true-crime stories behind them, re-telling their killing sprees in gripping detail.
Journey with the authors as they lay out how the stories these men told themselves about their lives contributed to where they ended up – and how those stories aren't that different from those we all tell ourselves.

The inspiration for this novel came to Lesley-Anne when she realised at her Father's funeral that although she'd known him her whole life, she'd never taken the time to ask him more about his life before she was born. She resolved not to let the same thing happen to her children, and that she would therefore tell the story of how she was born in Brazil and grew up in Nigeria, Switzerland, boarding school, Kenya, nursing, up to her marriage in 1979 and the birth of her two children. The thread that weaves through and holds together the story is Lesley's volatile relationship with her mother, which stands in contrast to her close relationship with her grandmother with which many people can identify. This memoir serves as an example for others to follow to leave as part of their legacy and share their lives with their children and descendents before they've passed away and taken their memories with them.
