Summary

In "The Devil's Elixirs," E. T. A. Hoffmann masterfully weaves a narrative that explores the boundaries of madness and morality through the lens of gothic fantasy. The novel is presented in a rich, baroque style, interlaced with elements of surrealism that capture the melancholic and at times absurd nature of the human condition. Set against the backdrop of early 19th-century Europe, the story follows the tormented protagonist, Medardus, as he grapples with his descent into madness, catalyzed by a sinister elixir that symbolizes both temptation and the loss of self. Hoffmann's intricate layering of storytelling, characterized by vivid characterizations and a deep psychological introspection, situates this work within the romantic literary context, allowing for profound reflections on duality and the supernatural. E. T. A. Hoffmann, a pivotal figure in German Romantic literature, often delved into themes of horror and the psychological complexities of his characters. His unique background as a lawyer, musician, and writer undoubtedly influenced the creation of "The Devil's Elixirs," as he sought to explore the darker aspects of human existence, drawing from folklore and personal experiences with mental health struggles. Hoffmann'Äôs own fascination with the uncanny and the irrational permeates the narrative, offering insights into the tumultuous human psyche. Readers seeking an atmospheric dive into existential questions and the human experience will find "The Devil's Elixirs" an essential addition to their literary exploration. Hoffmann's skillful blend of fantasy, psychological depth, and moral ambiguity not only creates an enthralling narrative but also invites critical reflections on the nature of evil and the complexity of identity. This novel is a must-read for fans of gothic literature, those curious about the intricacies of the mind, and anyone interested in the nuances of Romantic-era literature.

Between the Dead and the Deep Blue Sea is a bone-chilling trio of early Lovecraft tales, which evoke cosmic horrors, creeping madness, and ancient unknowable forces. Strange events unfurl on storm-lashed coastlines, in crumbling villages, and in dream-like realms beyond the comprehension of mere mortals.. Brought to life by the spine-tingling narration of Dr. Jon Overton, each story lures the reader into unsettling encounters with the weird and uncanny...
An Introduction by Dr Jon Overton, sets these early works of Lovecraft in their historical context and analyses Lovecraft's key themes and his influence on the world of sci-fi, fantasy and horror writing.
The stories themselves: In The Terrible Old Man, petty criminals foolishly tempt fate when they meddle with a sinister sea captain who consorts with eldritch powers. The Cats of Ulthar unspools like a sinister fable, where cosmic justice claws from the shadows in terrible vengeance against those who are mean and cruel. Finally, Dagon drags readers down into abyssal horror as a stranded sailor discovers the remains of an ancient undersea civilization, and encounters a vast nightmarish entity, which leaves his sanity in tatters..
Taken together, these three short stories exemplify Lovecraft’s signature themes: terror of the unknown, haunted relics, ancient stone carvings, and of course - vast and monstrous forces that burst through the thin veil of humanity's cherished "normality", and are utterly indifferent to their catastrophic impact on the feeble minds of those puny humans unlucky enough to behold them!
Fans of the Cthulhu Mythos, supernatural folklore, and uncanny events will find these tales irresistible..

The background to Heaven Burns is very real. Research estimates that between 1590 and 1622, around 1,000 women may have been executed in Scotland for witchcraft, and many more tried.
In Scotland, under the second King Charles, and especially after the passing of the 1649 Witchcraft Act, local religious leaders began hunt and execute witches. Once a woman had been accused of witchcraft, all that was needed by the local minister was a confession. Instead of a confession however, women could be condemned through the use of witchpricking.
Just as it sounds, witch pricking was a vicious practice, which involved pricking accused women with various needles in order to obtain proof of witchcraft.
The cover and interior illustrations of Heaven Burns show an imaginative rendering of some of the witchpricker's accoutrements and chattels
As well as being brutally drawn in places, Heaven Burns is also a story of passion. It is excellently researched, for anyone interested in historical fiction, especially around the period of Scottish witch hunting.

A collection of spooky tales to invade the mind and explore the legend of the Ghost of The Pannell Witch.
Each story in this collection takes the reader on a deep dive into one of the many versions of the legend of Mary Pannell, who was executed for witchcraft in the small town of Kippax, West Yorkshire, in 1603. Her ghost is said to haunt the woods on the hill that to this day bear her name.
Was she the town’s wise woman, providing herbal remedies to its residents? Like many women executed for witchcraft in the 17th century, she may have been betrayed by her own friends and neighbours. But even in death, perhaps she continued to help those who needed it.
Perhaps she targeted by her local community because of her sexuality. What if her ghost takes it on herself to look out for the queer residents of Kippax?
Or is her story a darker one? Some say that whoever sees the ghost of Mary Pannell will soon have a death in the family. That Mary takes out her revenge on the young sons of Kippax. When one determined mother, who has lost everything, decides to fight back, can she manage to save the town?
