Summary

Phillip Morton is the son of a yeoman farmer. His mother was a beautiful woman, yet distant. When Phillip was a young boy, his father was pushed off the edge of a slate quarry and fell to his death. A servant from the local castle is suspected, but nothing is proven.
By pure accident ten years later, Phillip meets the lord Ravenor of the local castle. A scholar and adventurer, Ravenor offers to pay for Phillip’s education if Phillip befriends his wayward nephew and provide him a good influence. Along the way, Phillip meets the mysterious Mr. Marx, Lord Ravenor’s secretary. There is something not quite right about Mr. Marx, and it peaks Phillip’s interest.

She’s on trial for murder… Now it’s her turn to tell her story…
The truth is that I loved James with my whole heart. We were soulmates: meant to be together forever. I had just found out I was carrying his child.
But it’s time to tell my side of the story. It’s time everyone knew what happened on our wedding day, on our honeymoon, and on that fateful last drive together. It’s time everyone found out about the secrets and about the threat that loomed over our marriage. It’s time everyone found out who really killed James.
And I need everyone to believe me. To believe I’m not a killer. Because if they don’t, then my baby won’t just have no father… she’ll have no mother.

What is the price of justice? Everything. Bass Olson, a genius, out-of-work software designer, returns to Innocence, Arkansas, to be by his grandfather's deathbed. No one has been able to understand Old Zeke's final words, but Bass creates a program that can decipher them. Old Zeke wants his son's murderer caught and brought to justice. Gran Olson is a feisty retired MASH nurse whose ingenuity and devotion are well-known in Innocence. The night her husband dies, everything changes. Once she learns the truth of her son's murder, she dives into the case completely. With the help of Old Zeke's million-dollar insurance settlement offered as a reward, Gran and Bass begin gathering old clues. They soon find themselves confronting gangs, the KKK, family members who want more than a small piece of the money, and all sorts of characters comfortable with casual killing. This is an audio enhanced version - with music and sound effects - of a book long hailed as one of the great science fiction classics, H.G. Wells' The Island of Doctor Moreau. It tells the story of Edward Prendick, a shipwreck survivor who is brought to an uncharted island where he encounters Doctor Moreau, a mad scientist bent on experimenting with human/animal hybrids. Described by Wells himself as "an exercise in youthful blasphemy," this story is a disturbing and fascinating look into the moral responsibility of scientific experimentation, the ethics of meddling with the natural world and, ultimately, what it means to be human.
