Summary

In "The Heart of the Antarctic, Volume 2," E. H. Shackleton provides a gripping account of his harrowing expedition to the South Pole, capturing both the beauty and brutality of the Antarctic landscape. The narrative combines vivid, poetic descriptions with a meticulous scientific approach, embodying the literary style of early 20th-century adventure literature. Shackleton's work stands as a significant contribution to exploration literature, capturing not only the physical challenges faced by the team but also the psychological resilience required to withstand the extremities of the environment—a testament to the era's spirit of adventure and discovery. E. H. Shackleton, an accomplished explorer whose career was marked by several ambitious expeditions, draws from his own experiences and expertise in navigating the treacherous Antarctic terrain. His deep understanding of leadership and human endurance shines through in the text, influenced by his formative adventures and the desire to expand scientific knowledge during a time when exploration was at its zenith. Shackleton's firsthand experiences lend authenticity to his recounting, illuminating the struggles and triumphs endured by his crew against the backdrop of nature's vast indifference. This volume is a must-read for admirers of exploration narratives and those intrigued by the limits of human endurance. Courage Under Fire is the first book published about Operation Lamar Plain. After fifty years, the story of the renowned 101st Airborne's major offensive near Tam Ky, South Vietnam, remains largely unknown. Fighting at Tam Ky by the 1st Brigade began 15 May 1969 while the 101st's 3rd Brigade battled on Hamburger Hill. The political consequences of Hamburger Hill's high casualties caused Lamar Plain and its high casualties to remain classified and undisclosed. Decades later, the fighting at Tam Ky is mostly forgotten except by those who fought there.

Sherwood's superb research of now declassified records uncovers how such a large battle could remain hidden and undisclosed. But that is not the heart of his story. His focus is on the courage and commitment of the young infantry soldiers who fought. This book uses actual battle records and eyewitness accounts to follow "Never Quit" Delta Company and its sister companies through continuous combat at Tam Ky. Delta Company's soldiers lived up to their motto despite increasing casualties, a tough enemy, harsh battlefield conditions, and loss of leaders.

For all who fought at Tam Ky, their bravery and devotion to duty in an increasingly unpopular war is worthy to be remembered. With veterans of Tam Ky now growing older and fewer in number, it is past time to tell their story.

Indiana-born Vivian Gordon fluttered to New York in 1920 looking for fame and fortune. Before long, the flame-haired chorus girl parlayed her youth, beauty, and ambition into more profitable means as a tough and glamorous symbol of Prohibition-era excess. She was a speakeasy owner, blackmailer, high-end escort, extortionist, racketeer, and con woman. But given her dangerously intimate associations, Vivian was also a woman who knew too much and who rightfully feared for her life.

On February 26, 1931, Vivian's bludgeoned and garroted body was found dumped in Van Cortland Park in the Bronx. Now, in the first in-depth biography of its kind, Pulitzer Prize and Emmy Award-winning journalist Anthony M. DeStefano unravels her tumultuous life and the headline-making murder that became an obsession for many.

The evidence Vivian left behind was damning: a diary with more than three-hundred names implicating powerful officials, philanthropists, businessmen, and every major gangland figure in collusion and corruption. The investigation eventually resulted in the career-ending of James "Jimmy" Walker, disgraced mayor of New York City. Broadway Butterfly finally finds a place in history for Vivian, a woman with a rare legacy in gangster lore, whose demise was as tragically inevitable as the brutality of the city's demimonde during Prohibition.
