Originating in South America, this fruit's journey highlights the intricate interplay of cultural adaptation, culinary innovation, and economic incentives that shaped its worldwide acceptance. One intriguing aspect is how the tomato, once viewed with suspicion due to its relation to poisonous plants, became a cornerstone of Mediterranean cuisine, particularly in Italy and Spain.

The book meticulously traces the tomato's path across continents, detailing its integration into Asian cuisines like Indian curries and Southeast Asian sauces. This exploration sheds light on the broader themes of globalization and cultural exchange, emphasizing how food shapes and reflects societal values. He outlines how maintaining military force over other nations goes against core American values. The speech highlights specific issues that were current at the time, particularly US relations with Cuba and the Philippines. Though the speech is over 100 years old, its core points about American democracy ring true in contemporary foreign affairs.

Perry’s 1853 flotilla included two sailing ships and two steamships, and Perry returned in February 1854. The Japanese may not have been very impressed with the gifts from America that Perry presented, but they clearly were impressed by the steamships. Perry’s cruises and other threatening events resulted in a fundamental change in Japan, so much so that after having given up guns in the 1600s, the Japanese quickly moved to reintroduce them in the wake of the Americans’ arrival. It became painfully evident that if Japan was to avoid becoming another victim of European colonial expansion, the country would have to become powerful itself.
Perry remains a fairly familiar name in America as a result of his time in Asia, but that legacy actually belies just how influential he was for the U.S. Navy back at home. Known as the “Father of the Steam Navy” in America, Perry not only modernized America’s naval forces, but literally wrote the book on it, helping put together doctrinaire curricula for the country’s future sailors. He was also a seasoned veteran, having fought in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War, ensuring that by the time he died in 1858, he was considered a national hero.

"Coming of Age in Samoa: A Psychological Study of Primitive Youth for Western Civilization" by Margaret Mead is a pioneering work in cultural anthropology that examines the adolescence and cultural practices of Samoan youth. Originally published in 1928, Mead's study challenges Western assumptions about the universality of adolescent experiences and sheds light on the influence of cultural factors on human behavior.
In this groundbreaking work, Mead explores Samoan society's impact on the emotional and psychological development of its youth, focusing on the transition from adolescence to adulthood. Mead's findings suggest that cultural factors, such as societal norms and expectations, significantly shape individuals' behaviors and attitudes during this crucial life stage.
The book sparked significant debate and discussion, as Mead's conclusions contradicted prevailing notions of the time regarding the fixed and biologically determined nature of human development. Her work influenced the field of anthropology and contributed to a broader understanding of cultural relativism.
"Coming of Age in Samoa" remains a seminal work that invites readers to reconsider their perspectives on cultural diversity and the ways in which societal expectations shape human experiences, particularly during the formative years of adolescence.

The book follows these two Boston boys from army training through deployment to the war zone and the shock of first combat missions, to helicopter air assault "Search and Destroy" operations from the Cambodian border to the sands of the South China Sea.
