Sinopsis

Motorhead were arguably the greatest rock and roll band in history, but it took many years to win that accolade. As a result, this is the story of the band that refused to die. The band had to deal with wayward producers, hostile record companies, a couple of false starts and even the ignominy of being proclaimed the Worst Band in the World by the NME!

Famed for their loudness and their singular anthem, ‘Ace Of Spades’, Motorhead not only proved inspirational for a host of newer bands but also, accidentally, created two sub-genres of heavy music - speed and thrash metal. Not bad for a band who announced themselves with: ‘We are Motorhead, and we play rock and roll.’ at live gigs.

This book covers every studio album, combined with many rarities and the more significant solo work from Lemmy. Beginning with the highly regarded trio of albums that ended the 1970s, the book continues through the line-up hardships and turmoil of the 1980s to the occasionally awkward musical experiments of the early 1990s. It finally closes with the band’s triumphant two-decade-long career revival, making this book an essential companion to the entire studio output of a unique and iconic band.

Duncan Harris started as a music journalist and interviewer in the 1980s, writing for fanzines and magazines. He contributed to the Rough Guides music series and, until recently, maintained a long series of reviews for the Internet website The Dreaded Press. This book is the result, a labour of love for an iconic band. Duncan continues to live in Wiltshire, UK, with his remarkable wife, their dog Willow and their cat Lily.

The Ming Dynasty, one of China's most influential and enduring dynasties, emerged in the aftermath of the Mongol-led Yuan Dynasty’s decline. It was a period marked by great transformation, political consolidation, and cultural revival. The dynasty's establishment under Zhu Yuanzhang, later known as Emperor Hongwu, signified the restoration of Han Chinese rule and the reinforcement of Confucian governance. Through military conquest, administrative reforms, and strategic centralization of power, the Ming Dynasty laid the foundation for a strong and prosperous China.
The fall of the Yuan Dynasty was driven by internal corruption, economic mismanagement, and widespread discontent. Mongol rulers faced difficulties controlling the vast empire, and their reliance on foreign administrators alienated the native Chinese population. Heavy taxation and frequent natural disasters exacerbated social unrest, leading to a series of revolts across the country. Among these rebellions, the Red Turban Rebellion, a movement rooted in peasant uprisings and religious discontent, played a crucial role in undermining Yuan authority. It was within this turbulent period that Zhu Yuanzhang, a former Buddhist monk turned military leader, rose to prominence. His leadership and military strategies enabled him to unify rebel factions and ultimately overthrow the Mongols in 1368, marking the beginning of the Ming Dynasty.
Upon ascending the throne, Emperor Hongwu sought to consolidate power and rebuild a nation weakened by war and misrule. His first priority was to eliminate threats to his rule, which led to purges against those he suspected of disloyalty. To prevent a recurrence of Yuan-era administrative failures, he restructured the government, reducing the influence of court eunuchs and emphasizing Confucian ideals in governance. He also reinstated the civil service examination system, ensuring that officials were selected based on merit rather than birthright.

    Christ Brings All Newness -...

St. Irenaeus teaches that “Christ brought all newness in bringing himself.” This representative collection of the writings of Father Robert Imbelli proclaims, celebrates, and sounds the depths of the newness of Jesus Christ and the radical transformation to which Christ calls believers. Rooted in Scripture and the Fathers of the Church, these essays, reviews, and reflections explore the Christian faith’s rich liturgical, artistic, literary, and theological traditions across the centuries. At a time when Catholic theology too often risks being reduced to sociology and Christian faith and discipleship diluted to mere moralism, the author proposes a vibrant and profound mystagogic theology. In such theology, the mystery of Christ is not only notional but real, not only described but evoked. Imbelli offers a theology and vision of the Christian faith at once intellectually stimulating and deeply affective.

    Edo Period - Tokugawa Rule...

The Edo period in Japan began with the dramatic rise of Tokugawa Ieyasu and the establishment of the Tokugawa Shogunate, which would bring over two centuries of relative peace and stability to the country. This transformation was not immediate but was set into motion by the pivotal Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. Ieyasu, a powerful daimyo and skilled strategist, emerged victorious in this decisive conflict, defeating rival factions and securing his dominance over the fractured Japanese landscape. This battle marked the end of the Warring States period, a time of nearly constant civil war, and laid the foundation for a new era of centralized feudal rule.
In 1603, Ieyasu was granted the title of shogun by the emperor, officially establishing the Tokugawa Shogunate. Although the emperor remained a symbolic figurehead, true political power rested with the shogun. Ieyasu’s government was based in Edo, a small fishing village that quickly developed into a sprawling political and economic center—modern-day Tokyo. From here, the Tokugawa clan implemented a system of governance that emphasized strict control, social hierarchy, and regional oversight. The shogunate devised a complex administrative structure that allowed it to maintain authority over hundreds of semi-autonomous domains ruled by daimyo, while ensuring loyalty through a combination of military strength, economic policy, and social regulation.
One of the key strategies used by Tokugawa Ieyasu to solidify his power was the creation of the han system. Under this arrangement, each daimyo governed a specific territory but was subject to strict oversight from the shogunate. The policy of sankin-kotai, or alternate attendance, required daimyo to spend alternating years in Edo, effectively draining their resources and keeping them under close surveillance. Their families were often kept in Edo as virtual hostages, ensuring obedience and discouraging rebellion.

Line of Duty holds its status as the defining TV crime drama of today. The conspiracy theme of the series chimes at a time when public institutions and representatives are distrusted.
Ted Hastings, the show's head of anti-corruption, has emerged as the beating heart of the series. This book reveals how the compelling drama reflects real crimes, events and figures, most notably that of Robert Mark and his battle against Met corruption.
‘None of my people would plant evidence. They know I would throw the book at them… followed by the bookshelf’
Starting with a bang – ‘I’ll put you all back in uniform’ were his first words to his team. New Met Commissioner Robert Mark – the inspiration for Ted Hastings – took on his entire corruption-riddled detective branch in his first brutal speech. The scale of the problem facing Robert Mark was institutionalised corruption in CID.
During his four years eleven months as commissioner, he saw 478 men leave the force following or in anticipation of criminal/disciplinary proceedings. Departures in the previous decade had averaged about 16 a year.
Mark's extraordinary career established the need for a dedicated team to investigate corruption that lives on today.
