It has also experienced large-scale immigration during a period when other Anglophone and many other European countries mainstream political parties have witnessed the exploitation of anti-immigrant nativism by some political mainstream parties as well as by the far right. Diverse Republic examines, as part of a wider focus on how immigration has changed Irish society, the emergence of antiimmigrant far-right groups through a focus on some key figures within these. It also considers the response of mainstream politics to immigration and examines efforts to encourage the integration of newcomers.The first part of the book examines how Irish society and identity has changed since the foundation of the state. This is relevant to the second part, which examines how and to what extent far right anti-immigration politics are likely to flourish or not in the Irish case. The second part of the book examines the appeal of far-right political responses to immigration in a context where some Irish citizens no longer appear to be represented by the political mainstream and where nativist populists lay claim to the symbols and heroes of the Republic.Diverse Republic makes the case for proactive measures to promote immigrant integration and social cohesion through citizenship, social policy and community development. It engages with shifting nationalist understandings of Irishness and makes the case for taking these seriously even if anti-immigrant nativist nationalism has found only fringe support in Irish politics to date. The symbols and history of what has become a diverse Republic should not become the property of those who would exclude some of its citizens.

  Several years ago, I was approached by Carolyn Wyman, author of “The Great American Chocolate Chip Cookie Book” to write a book about Otis Spunkmeyer Cookies.  I am co-founder of Otis Spunkmeyer Cookies with my husband, but no one starts a company alone.  I told her that Otis Spunkmeyer was about many things besides cookies, and I wrote stories to prove it.  Carolyn agreed, indicating my most fascinating stories had nothing to do with cookies.  She suggested I compile my “you can’t make this up” stories of improbable possibilities.  
  My entrepreneurial stories are of Robert C. Brown and Company, investment advisors, and Otis Spunkmeyer Cookies and Burritos.  Triple 888 Manufacturing, the sheet metal company that created the oven to bake Otis Spunkmeyer cookies.  Sentimental Journeys, the DC3 airline that promoted Otis Spunkmeyer.  New Shoes, Old Souls Dance Company, Yoga Garden Dancers, Heterodoxy Magazine, and George Magazine.  Yes, I did meet with John F. Kennedy Jr., to incubate George.  I also took Joe DiMaggio to Las Vegas and Van Morrison sang “Moondance” to me.  Albert Einstein is one of my heroes.  I have daughters.  These narratives are a memorialization of my improbable possibilities.  My spaghetti-walling spirit propagated waves. 
  The most powerful quantum computers can’t negotiate infinite waves of possibilities.  Artificial intelligence generates probable possibilities.  Human intelligence imagines improbable possibilities.  Artificial intelligence exists on codes and algorithms.  Human intelligence is nurtured by thinking with thoughtfulness.  It actualizes imagination, and spaghetti-walls improbable possibilities. 
  This is not a treatise on mindfulness.  It is not an AI bashing, or a self-help book.  Primarily, I am spaghetti-walling this book to entertain you.  I’ve been determined to make waves.

  Yin, a paradoxical, still, dark, chaotic, and unknowable principal. The oft forgotten counterpart to Yang, Yin is among the most mystical topics yet also the most difficult to describe. It has so many taboo, confusing, and paradoxical aspects. Yet, in its darkness lies the source of action, success, and meaning. Hidden in Yin life phases, experiences, and events is something secret and abundant. Through a Yin path, one can achieve huge outcomes by doing nothing. One can win by yielding and garner support by listening. One can manifest by waiting, impact through silence, and be strong through weakness. In other words, the Yin ways are the forgotten methods of moving receptively through life, begetting huge abundance with little effort. However, through thousands of years of Yang domination, only the Yang, active, and masculine methods of accomplishment have survived as the sole path to success. How can we tap into the mystical, powerful, and hidden strategies latent in a Yin way of doing and seeing things? The famous Taoist sage, Lao Tzu, advised to “know the male but keep to the female.” His words indicated that if a sage could keep to the receptive and Yin path, then there is nothing he cannot do. Yin is the paradoxical headwaters of all manifestation, and by aligning ourselves with Yin methods we can, like ancient masters, siphon abundance from a Yin and Yang world. Yin Mysticism is an ontological treatise and hypothesis on the unknowable and dark half of all things: the wu-wei-like tactics for aligning with Yin.

  Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation designed to make a person question their reality, memory, and perceptions. This insidious tactic is often used to exert power and control over others, making them more vulnerable to influence. The term originates from the 1944 film Gaslight, in which a husband manipulates his wife into doubting her own sanity by subtly altering her environment and insisting that she is imagining things. Over time, the concept has evolved to describe a range of behaviors intended to destabilize and disorient a target, whether in personal relationships, workplaces, politics, or broader societal contexts. 
  At its core, gaslighting is not about simple lying or deception—it is about eroding a person’s confidence in their ability to trust their own thoughts and feelings. Gaslighters often employ tactics such as denial, contradiction, misdirection, and trivialization to manipulate their targets. For instance, they may deny having said or done something, even when there is clear evidence to the contrary. They may dismiss a person’s concerns as overreactions or exaggerations, making the victim feel unreasonable for questioning the situation. Over time, the repeated nature of these tactics causes the victim to second-guess their own reality, often leading to confusion, self-doubt, and emotional dependence on the manipulator. 
  Gaslighting thrives in power imbalances. It is most commonly seen in relationships where one party has an advantage over the other—whether through authority, emotional leverage, or societal position. In romantic relationships, a partner may gaslight their significant other to maintain control, dismissing valid concerns about infidelity, financial issues, or abusive behavior. In workplaces, gaslighting can manifest when a superior undermines an employee’s confidence, making them doubt their competence or memory of events.
