“Fascinating” stories of real-life people and events that inspired the author of the classic adventure novel Robinson Crusoe (Historical Novel Society).   This book looks at some of the stories that inspired Daniel Defoe, author of Robinson Crusoe—stories of bravery, determination, and good fortune, as well as human negligence, sheer stupidity, and bad luck. In addition to an overview of Defoe’s life and his monumentally successful novel, it also considers some of the reasons why people found themselves cast away—as a result of being wrecked, abandoned as a punishment, or marooned by pirates, or even out of deliberate choice.   Major hurricanes in the eighteenth century causing huge damage to shipping and loss of life are also covered, along with catastrophes when ships were lost, and astonishing tales of survival in the face of adversity—down in the Falklands, in the Caribbean, and off the coast of Australia. It looks at how being cast away brings out the best in some—and in others the very worst. And it examines perhaps the most astonishing story of them all—sixty slaves abandoned on a desolate treeless island in the Indian Ocean and left there for fifteen years, some of whom survived against all odds.

    Destruction of 17th Century...

In the mid-17th century, the heart of England fell victim to the mother of all epidemic catastrophes. The city of London was a ghost town, deserted by those who knew better than to hang around in a breeding ground that offered near-certain doom. Those who were confined within the city's borders had to make do with what they had, and the pitifully low morale seemed appropriate; the reek of rot and decomposition pervaded the air day in and day out, while corpses, young and old, riddled with strange swellings and blackened boils, littered the streets. For Londoners, to say it was hell would be an understatement.
With some bad luck and bad timing, a potential disaster awaited the city, and that finally came in September 1666. As it turned out, the Great Fire of London was so bad that one author who studied the blaze described it as “the perfect fire,” referring to the convergence in the largest city in England of spark, wood and wind in such a way that no one could stop the fire or even fight it effectively. John Evelyn, who had warned of the potential for a devastating fire given the layout of the city, noted that people seemed so stunned by the scope of the fire that they didn’t know what to do: “The conflagration was so universal, and the people so astonished, that from the beginning, I know not by what despondency or fate, they hardly stirred to quench it, so that there was nothing heard or seen but crying out and lamentation, running about like distracted creatures without at all attempting to save even their goods, such a strange consternation there was upon them.”
While the fire quickly spread throughout the heart of the city, the only thing that saved London’s suburbs was an ancient wall built around the city to keep the enemies of Rome out, not the fire in.  . By the time it was finished, most of the city’s homes and churches lay in ashes, and nearly 90% of the city’s citizens were left homeless.

In Homelessness Is a Housing Problem, Gregg Colburn and Clayton Page Aldern seek to explain the substantial regional variation in rates of homelessness in cities across the United States. In a departure from many analytical approaches, Colburn and Aldern shift their focus from the individual experiencing homelessness to the metropolitan area. Using accessible statistical analysis, they test a range of conventional beliefs about what drives the prevalence of homelessness in a given city—including mental illness, drug use, poverty, weather, generosity of public assistance, and low-income mobility—and find that none explain the regional variation observed across the country. Instead, housing market conditions, such as the cost and availability of rental housing, offer a far more convincing account. With rigor and clarity, Homelessness Is a Housing Problem explores United States cities' diverse experiences with housing precarity and offers policy solutions for unique regional contexts.

Women are born with all the eggs they will ever have, and 90 percent of them are gone by age 30. The eggs that remain will decline in both quantity and quality, making it increasingly difficult to become pregnant around the same time that many women are focused on finding a life partner, building their career, or both. But Jaime Knopman, MD, wants you to know that science has advanced, the world has transformed, and the choices available to us have changed too. For years, Dr. Knopman’s practice in a thriving New York City–based fertility clinic focused on infertility; now, she is primarily a fertility specialist who helps countless women and couples understand and utilize the latest options that can offer reproductive freedom. This shift is profound, as everything about the way we can, and increasingly do, make babies has changed, with implications that extend far beyond family planning. In Own Your Fertility, Dr. Knopman and coauthor Rebecca Raphael offer an accessible modern–day overview of how advancements in the field of fertility treatment have transformed the path to pregnancy, while also sounding the alarm that women in particular can—and should—take control of their reproduction. Whether you’re trying to get pregnant, thinking about having a baby in the future, or simply want to keep your options open, this book is your guide to all things reproductive planning, from egg and embryo freezing to IVF, sperm and egg donors, and surrogacy.
