Life is a complex tapestry of joys, sorrows, successes, and challenges. As humans, we often find ourselves striving to avoid discomfort, suppressing unpleasant emotions, or seeking control over our inner struggles. Yet, these strategies often lead to frustration and a sense of disconnection from what truly matters. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy offers a compelling alternative: a way to embrace life’s full spectrum while committing to actions that align with your values and aspirations.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is a modern behavioral therapy rooted in the principle of psychological flexibility—the ability to adapt to changing circumstances, remain present, and take meaningful actions even in the face of adversity. Instead of battling unwanted thoughts and emotions, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages acceptance of them as natural elements of human existence. This shift in perspective allows individuals to redirect their energy from avoidance to engagement, fostering a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
The framework of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is built around six core processes: acceptance, cognitive defusion, mindfulness, self-as-context, values clarification, and committed action. These processes are not isolated steps but interconnected skills that work together to enhance well-being. Acceptance teaches you to make room for difficult emotions without judgment or resistance. Cognitive defusion helps you view your thoughts with clarity, reducing their power to dominate your actions. Mindfulness anchors you in the present moment, while self-as-context fosters a stable and compassionate sense of self. Values clarification identifies what truly matters to you, and committed action translates those values into meaningful, goal-directed behavior.

“One function of the poet at any time is to discover by his own thought and feeling what seems to him to be poetry at that time,” writes Wallace Stevens. In Quiet Night Think, award-winning poet Gillian Sze expresses her own definition.

During the remarkable period of early parenthood, Sze’s new maternal role urges her to contemplate her own origins, both familial and artistic. Comprised of six personal essays, poems, and a concluding long poem, Quiet Night Think takes its title from a direct translation of an eighth-century Chinese poem by Li Bai, the subject of the opening essay. Sze’s memory of reading Li Bai’s poem as a child marks the beginning of an unshakable encounter with poetry. What follows is an intimate anatomization of her particular entanglement with languages and cultures.

In her most generically diverse book yet, Sze moves between poetry and prose, mother and writer, the lyrical and the autobiographical, all the while inviting readers to meditate with her on questions of emergence and transformation: What are you trying to be? Where does a word break off? What calls to us throughout the night?

Vikings in the East - From...

In Western Europe, we typically associate Vikings with the storm-tossed waters of the North Sea and the North Atlantic, the deep Scandinavian fjords and the attacks on the monasteries and settlements of north-western Europe. This popular image rarely includes the river systems of Russia and Ukraine, the wide sweep of the Eurasian steppe, the far shores of the Caspian Sea, the incense and rituals of the Eastern Orthodox Church and the high walls and towers of the city of Constantinople. Yet for many Viking raiders, traders and settlers, it was the road to the East that beckoned.
These Viking adventurers founded the Norse–Slavic dynasties of the Rus, which are entangled in the bitterly contested origin myths of Russia and Ukraine. The Rus were the first community in the region to convert to Christianity – in its Eastern Orthodox form – and so they are at the heart of the concept of 'Holy Russia'. Russian rulers have frequently referenced these Norse origins when trying to enhance their power and secure control over the Ukrainian lands, most recently demonstrated by Vladimir Putin as his justification for seizing Crimea and invading Ukraine.
In this fascinating and timely book, historian Martyn Whittock explores the important but often misunderstood and manipulated role played by the Vikings in the origins of Russian power, the deadly consequences of which we are still living with today.
