During the remarkable period of early parenthood, Sze’s new maternal role urges her to contemplate her own origins, both familial and artistic. Comprised of six personal essays, poems, and a concluding long poem, Quiet Night Think takes its title from a direct translation of an eighth-century Chinese poem by Li Bai, the subject of the opening essay. Sze’s memory of reading Li Bai’s poem as a child marks the beginning of an unshakable encounter with poetry. What follows is an intimate anatomization of her particular entanglement with languages and cultures.
		 
In her most generically diverse book yet, Sze moves between poetry and prose, mother and writer, the lyrical and the autobiographical, all the while inviting readers to meditate with her on questions of emergence and transformation: What are you trying to be? Where does a word break off? What calls to us throughout the night?

Israel’s Day of Independence, Yom Ha’atzmaut, is celebrated on the fifth day of the Hebrew calendar in the month of Iyar. It is immediately preceded by Yom HaZikaron, the Memorial Day for the fallen Israeli soldiers who gave their lives for Israel’s establishment. Emphasis switches from the memorial celebration to the celebration of independence a few minutes after sundown.
The day on which the state of Israel was signed into existence was May 14, 1948. Many important figures in Israeli history played a part in the establishment of the new state, and among the most iconic is the nation’s first female premier, Golda Meir. Known as the “uncrowned queen of Israel” and “Mother Courage,” Meir was an activist for many years, lobbying for a Jewish state in the Mandate of Palestine. She served in numerous capacities before her appointment as Prime Minister and remains one of the most revered Israeli leaders from the pre-state years through the long-sought dream of a Jewish nation.
One of eight children from a poverty-stricken family, she was to become an immigrant to a new land twice in her life. Meir and her parents fled from Kyiv during Russia's antisemitic pogroms in 1905, about a decade after the Dreyfus Affair in France. She grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin before rising the ranks back in the Middle East. When it came to Israel and her role in its early years, she noted, "We Jews have a secret weapon in our struggle with the Arabs; we have no place to go."
As in the days of the Biblical Hebrews’ migration out of Egypt under Pharaoh, finding a Jewish homeland meant the adjustment of national boundaries and the displacement of certain neighboring cultures. In the modern age, this has led to several major military conflicts and the need for an ongoing state of readiness within the Israeli military. Meir found herself at the helm of the Yom Kippur War, a time in which Israel was at its most vulnerable.

Margaret Cavendish, then Lucas, was born in 1623 to an aristocratic family. In 1644, as England descended into civil war, she joined the court of the formidable Queen Henrietta Maria at Oxford. Already tired of the thrash and unrelenting nature of punk rock, Devoto wanted to combine the elements of avant-garde and pop. This he did with 'Shot by Both Sides', 'the best rock & roll record of 1978, punk or otherwise' (Rolling Stone) followed by their first album Real Life. Three more equally acclaimed albums followed before Magazine disbanded. With unique access to the band and interviews with the great and the good of the 1980s and iconic musicians of today, Helen Chase presents a riveting insight into the world of punk and beyond. Placing the band in the context of the Manchester music scene she explains why the band has such a solid fan-base and why Magazine had decided to re-form for live gigs some 30 years since they first took to the stage.
Magazine was formed by Howard Devoto in 1977 bringing together some of the finest and most innovative musicians of the era. The core line-up with Devoto included John McGeoch, Barry Adamson, Dave Formula and John Doyle. The band had its roots in punk but had a greater emphasis on lyrical content whilst combining elements of avant-garde pop, funk and rock.
The band has maintained a cult following which was rewarded in 2009 when the band decided to reform. Whilst working on solo material Dave Formula reopened communication lines between the key players and a series of re-union gigs was planned and received to wide acclaim. Buoyed by this, a studio album of new material (No Thyself) followed in 2011 along with another foray onto the live scene. Magazine are a greatly respected and hugely influential band and their music remains fresh and relevant today.
