Sinopsis

Just Like Him To Die by Douglas Bruton tells of the last days of Dylan Thomas as he lies unconscious and dying far from his Welsh home in a hospital bed in New York's Saint Vincent Hospital.
Dylan Thomas was a womanizer, a drunk, a bad husband, parent and friend, but Just Like Him To Die makes an effort to redeem him.
In this new novella from Douglas Bruton, Dylan Thomas remembers ― albeit imperfectly ― episodes from his life which he transmutes these into gentle Under-Milk-Wood-like stories which are full of fun and word-play pyrotechnics.
After all, when we each come to tell the stories of our own lives, we turn them into 'untruths' in just the same way.
Weaving in and out of the poet's thoughts and recollections are the voices of those gathered around him at the end. At the poet's death, everyone forgives Dylan Thomas his failings and remembers only the soft and the warm and the good things about him.
Just Like Him To Die is subtitled 'a short novel for voices' which mirrors the subtitle for Under Milk Wood: (a play for voices).*
The novella can be as long or as short as a piece of string, and as such invites the writer to experiment with the form and encourages both an intense focus on the writing and a sustained sense of play. Think juggling and the writing of a novella is like that moment when all the balls are in the air at once, all in play at the same time – at least for this writer it is. In Just Like Him To Die, (which is, incidentally and by design, the same length as Dylan Thomas' 'play for voices', Under Milk Wood) I hope I have captured the ebullient character of the raconteur with the fictionalisation and fabrication of his life for the entertainment of others. Try reading this novella with the lilting Welsh voice of the great poet, all coffee-grounds and cigarette smoke, in duelling opposition to the New York drag and drawl of Liz, Linnie, John Malcolm Brinnin and the Doctors.

A TV reality show host helps to restore an East End music hall and uncovers the dreadful secret of Mrs Midnight and her Animal Comedians. . . . A historian travels to Switzerland to ghost the autobiography of an exiled Balkan king and encounters a sinister cult. . . . The Master of an Oxford college tries to introduce a dubious piece of modern sculpture into his college chapel with dire consequences. . . . A strange meeting takes place on a playing field between an officer on leave from the trenches and his former headmaster. . . .
The settings and characters in Reggie Oliver's fifth collection of 'strange' stories are as varied and unusual as ever, though, as in previous volumes, the theatre forms the milieu of a number of his tales. But the theatres are not just English ones, in the provinces and the West End: one is on the Black Sea; another in post-colonial Kenya. Themes are equally varied, but underlying all is a deep sense of the spiritual under-currents just below the surface of everyday existence, and the precariousness of 'normality'.

Reggie Oliver is an English playwright, biographer and writer of ghost stories. His work has appeared in a number of anthologies, including the Year's Best Fantasy and Horror and The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror.

Is she doing God's work, or something far more sinister?
Safely hidden behind a high fence that shields it from the rest of the world, Kinship Care provides a safe haven for children from City of England. Kinship Care is supported by the Happiness-Program... but there's a catch. To keep the food shipments coming, program director Enyd must provide fraudulent "proof" of the plague ravaging the city--photos of children suffering--to deter those tempted to leave the program.
It's been easy enough with a sinner like Ava, the only Unchipped child at Kinship Care, who keeps violating the rules by trying to contact her mother. Surely God would approve of the relatively mild punishments Ava has brought upon herself.
But now they want more. More shocking material. More pain. More punishment. More proof to show the good people in the city what it's like for those who defy the program. How far will Enyd go before she says enough?
CONTENT WARNING: child abuse. While not a main theme of the book or even described in detail, some readers may want to read the reviews or have a friend check out the book before reading.
