One woman’s dramatic account of her stint in the U.S. Marine Corps, exploring the prejudice and mistreatment of women in combat zones. Not even old enough to drink, Corporal Savannah Cannon is a young enlisted United States Marine deployed to support Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan in 2010. As a tactical data networking specialist, she is sent away from everyone she knows and attached to a Regimental Combat Team where women are not allowed to repair communications. Her experiences over the next few months shed light on the unique and difficult positions women are placed in when supporting combat roles, while offering a raw look at the painful choices women must sometimes make. Cannon finds herself in a combat zone, ostracized from family, friends, and even her fellow Marines as the men are told to avoid her. The connections she makes are born from trauma and desperation and the choices she makes will echo throughout many lives. Corporal Cannon is not the story of a heroine; it is the hard-hitting account of just one of the flawed individuals who make up the United States’ fighting forces. Mistakes in the battlefield can have dire consequences, personally and professionally. Reflecting on her time in service, the author weaves a story of past and present, and the healing that can come with admitting our mistakes and moving past them.

Stumbling Blocks is a powerful intergenerational memoir by Jennifer Krebs that explores her family’s journey from Nazi Germany to rural America. Blending personal history, Jewish identity, and emotional reflection, the book traces her father’s memories of growing up under the Third Reich and her own coming-of-age in small-town New York as the daughter of a survivor. The title refers to the Stolpersteine—brass plaques in Europe commemorating victims of National Socialism—that spark a meditation on trauma, memory, and belonging. With warmth, honesty, and a touch of wit, Krebs reflects on family legacy, the echoes of history, and the quiet resilience of survival.

Anna would have become the virtuous lady her parents had intended, but their sudden deaths leaves her orphaned and destitute and she is taken in by her godfather, a strict disciplinarian.
While defiant and afraid when first disciplined, Anna soon becomes an aficionado to the art of birching and realizes she is more excited by giving than receiving. She also develops a taste for the sensual pleasures of another woman with Sally, her godfather's maid, who soon becomes submissive to Anna's lascivious desires.
Unwilling to enter domestic service as a governess, Anna is apprenticed to Madame Stewart who quickly sells her virginity to a well-placed lord. His lordship is so delighted with Anna that he sets her up as his mistress in a fashionable London suite. But tiring of the confinement of the life of a concubine and his lordship's jealousy, she escapes to the continent. Following exposure to erotica by a ship's captain and a series of sexual adventures in Naples and Paris, Anna becomes a wealthy woman of pleasure and returns to London to establish her own brothel.
This erotic Victorian adventure includes birching, lesbian sex, virgin deflowering, role play and prostitution.

Celebrated leadership expert and political scientist Gautam Mukunda provides a comprehensive, objective, and non-partisan method for answering the most important question in the world: is someone up to the job of president of the United States?

In Picking Presidents, Gautam Mukunda sets his sights on presidential candidates, proposing a tested method to assess whether they will succeed or fail if they win the White House. Combining political science, psychology, organizational behavior, and economics, Picking Presidents will enable every American to cast an informed vote.

In his 2012 book Indispensable, which all but predicted the Trump presidency, Mukunda explained how both the very best and very worst leaders are "unfiltered"—outsiders who take power without the understanding or support of traditional elites. Picking Presidents provides deep analysis of filtered and unfiltered presidents alike, from failed haberdasher and skillful president Harry Truman, to the exceptionally well-qualified—and ultimately reviled—James Buchanan; from Andrew Johnson, who set civil rights back by a century, to Theodore Roosevelt, who evaded party opposition to transform American society. Picking Presidents lays out a clear framework that anyone can use to judge a candidate and answer the all-important question: are they up to the job?

The Art of Horsemanship and On...

Xenophon’s The Art of Horsemanship is a highly unusual text in the corpus of Classical Greek literature. It is a short survey on the various aspects of care for horses as seen by a highly experienced rider from the 5th century BCE. It is particularly notable because so many of its observations are relevant to the modern rider. Xenophon, friend of Socrates and professional soldier, is best known as the author Anabasis, the vivid account of a failed military expedition deep into Persia.

The Art of Horsemanship is very different in tone and content – a practical study from deep personal knowledge gained from working with horses, but none the less fascinating.

Xenophon considers what features and qualities to look for in a horse – among them broad chest, wide nostrils, prominent eye, supple knees, positive manner– and the sound of the hoof, which indicates good feet. (The ancient Greeks did not shoe their horses). There are even useful tips on approaching the horse to avoid conflict. He discusses training over different terrains and many other useful tips. The translator, Morris H. Morgan, provides extensive notes, not just on technical pointers such as mounting without stirrups or saddle, but also by comparing contemporary sculptures where artists took licence over reality. Furthermore, Morgan provides a fascinating essay The Greek Riding-Horse, which is an extended commentary on Xenophon. Also on this recording is Xenophon’s On The Cavalry General, a second treatise on horsemanship, but taking a different perspective.
