Summary

Visibility Law Clash explores the contentious legal battles surrounding LGBTQ+ representation and visibility, a critical area within politics and social science. It examines how censorship and institutional resistance shape the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals, focusing on the right to be seen and recognized. The book highlights the clash between fundamental rights and laws that suppress LGBTQ+ visibility, challenging equality and impacting broader societal values like free expression. For example, the book details how bans on public displays and symbols directly affect LGBTQ+ rights.

The book provides historical context, tracing the evolution of LGBTQ+ rights through landmark court cases and legislative changes. It also explores legal concepts like freedom of speech and equal protection, setting the stage for understanding the legal arguments at play. Visibility Law Clash is structured into three sections, beginning with core concepts, then delving into case studies of censorship in schools, challenges to LGBTQ+ representation in media, and finally discussing potential legal and policy solutions. This book uniquely focuses on the legal dimensions of LGBTQ+ visibility, providing valuable insights for scholars, policymakers, and advocates.

Johann Adam Möhler was professor theology at the Tübingen University where both Catholics and Protestants taught and studied. In 1832 he published Symbolism; a work that examined the doctrines of original sin, grace and free will as held by the different Christian confessions. It caused a storm of controversy in the Protestant nations of Europe. In it he turned the weapons furnished by Hegel, the “Protestant Aquinas”, against Protestantism. His method and style were supported by the use of facts, texts, and documents. By 1838 Symbolism had been translated to 8 languages and its author had died before he completed its 5th edition. In an age when the Catholic Church found itself divided into two camps, the “German” and the “Roman”, Döllinger, a former pupil of Möhler’s, when addressing a group of scholars at Munich in 1863 once famously quipped that the former were defending Catholicism with rifles while the latter were still using bows and arrows. The “Romans”, however, would succeed in silencing thier “German” brethren at the First Vatican Council and cut off a branch bearing good fruit. A rediscovery of the “German” school is long overdue and there is no better place to start than Möhler’s Symbolism. (Summary by Jeff Allen)

Gentle and Fierce—Two Sides of Self-Compassion That We All Need Now   A vast body of research shows that the skill of self-compassion can deeply calm and heal us. But there's also a fierce "momma bear" side of self-compassion. And all of us—especially women—need it more than ever.   In the face of a threatening or unjust situation, have you ever kept silent because you didn't want to rock the boat or make things worse? And then, did you wonder: "Next time, how can I become stronger and more effective?"   That's the purpose of The Yin and Yang of Self-Compassion. Kristin Neff, PhD, created this inspiring audio program to help you understand and build the two complementary aspects of this crucial skill:  The receptive Yin side self-compassion—how to soothe and comfort yourself when you're in pain and rest in loving, connected presence when alone or with those you care about.  The active Yang side self-compassion—how to see the truth of a situation with courage, protect yourself, and stand strong with others in the face of hostility or harm.   In the years since Kristin Neff and her colleagues first identified the trait of self-compassion, we’ve learned that being kind to ourselves does not weaken us. In fact, just the opposite is true: it makes us more confident, grounded, and resilient amid crisis.   Through fascinating research, stories from Kristin's own experiences as a mother and scientist, and key guided practices, you'll learn how to cultivate the full spectrum of self-compassion—to support yourself and others when it matters the most.
