Sinopse

Excerpt from An Account of Abimelech Coody: And Other Celebrated Writers of New-York in a Letter From a Traveller, to His Friend in South Carolina: "At the head of the list is a venerable old gentle man from Scotland. He has published more books than any other writer in New York. His History of Man and of All Nations are curious, and are pronounced by good judges to contain more solid information than the History of New York by Knickerbocker. His Mental Flower Garden is a very agreeable present to young persons and his Magazine of Wonders has a more extensive circulation than any other periodical performance. This worthy old gentleman sometimes sacrifices to the muses, and indeed it is believed that the Lay of the Scottish Fiddle owes some of its best lines to his munificence."

A spellbinding exploration of the human capacity to imagine the future

Our ability to think about the future is one of the most powerful tools at our disposal. In The Invention of Tomorrow, cognitive scientists Thomas Suddendorf, Jonathan Redshaw, and Adam Bulley argue that its emergence transformed humans from unremarkable primates to creatures that hold the destiny of the planet in their hands.

Drawing on their own cutting-edge research, the authors break down the science of foresight, showing us where it comes from, how it works, and how it made our world. Journeying through biology, psychology, history, and culture, they show that thinking ahead is at the heart of human nature—even if we often get it terribly wrong. Incisive and expansive, The Invention of Tomorrow offers a fresh perspective on the human tale that shows how our species clawed its way to control the future.

From the New York Times Bestselling authors of Ghosts of Honolulu comes their most harrowing true story yet.
It's 1942, and New York City is at war. German U-boats are sinking ships just miles offshore and Washington DC is convinced that waterfront spies are providing intelligence targeting the ships. To thwart the threat, the Office of Naval Intelligence reaches out to those with the most sway along the waterfronts of Brooklyn and Manhattan – the mob. The result will be one of the most successful and controversial operations in NCIS’ long history (before it was even called NCIS.)
The Navy’s alliance with Charles “Lucky” Luciano and his organization will send New Yorker Tony Marsloe and his fellow ONI officers on an international odyssey that includes conducting secret meetings with legendary criminals, hunting clandestine spy rings operating on U.S. soil and conducting daring undercover missions behind the bloody frontlines of the invasion of Italy.
Alongside towering historic figures like Meyer Lansky and Gen. George Patton, readers will encounter a kaleidoscope of agents and gangsters who not only shaped the war in Italy but the future of international crime itself.

Entering 1943, the Allies looked to press their advantage in the Pacific and Western Europe. The United States was firmly pushing the Japanese back across the Pacific, while the Americans and British plotted a major invasion somewhere in Western Europe to relieve the pressure on the Soviets. By the time the Allies conducted that invasion, the Soviets had lifted the siege of Stalingrad.
Even before the British and Americans were able to make major strategic decisions in 1943, a massive German surrender at Stalingrad in February marked the beginning of the end for Hitler’s armies in Russia. From that point forward, the Red Army started to steadily push the Nazis backward toward Germany. Yet it would still take the Red Army almost an entire two years to push the Germans all the way out of Russia. In July, just a few months after the surrender at Stalingrad, the Allies conducted what at the time was the largest amphibious invasion in history, coordinating the landing of two whole armies on Sicily, over a front more than 100 miles long. Within weeks of the beginning of the Allied campaign in Italy, Italy’s government wasted no time negotiating peace with the Allies and quickly quit the war.
Though Italy was no longer fighting for the Axis, German forces continued to occupy and control Italy in 1943. The Germans attempted to resist the Allies’ invasion on Sicily but were badly outmanned and outgunned, leading to a German evacuation of the island within a month. The Allies would land on the mainland of Italy in September and continue to campaign against the Germans there.
With Allied forces firmly established in Italy, the British and Americans began to plot a much more massive invasion to liberate Western Europe from the Nazis.
