Synopsis

A recipient of two Purple Hearts gives readers an inside view of US Army special forces through his own trial by fire during the Vietnam War. Days before he was drafted in 1962, Dennis Foley volunteered to join the army in the hopes of someday getting into West Point. He was only eighteen years old. At basic training in Fort Dix, New Jersey, a presentation by two impressive, self-confident special forces sergeants made an indelible impression on him. His career would come full circle. In 1972, wearing a green beret, Foley would be given command of his own A-Team. But between those two pivotal moments, his determination, loyalty, and mental and physical strength would be tested as never before, fighting in the jungles of Vietnam alongside the bravest men he would ever know. In Special Men, Foley describes his experience at the 7th Army NCO Academy in Germany, where he learned more about leadership than at any other school he would later attend. He takes us moment-by-moment on his heart-pounding introduction to combat—a nighttime, amphibious ambush patrol with the South Vietnamese Navy. We see the shock set in upon realizing that conventional training left him unprepared for the guerrilla army he faced in Vietnam. And we share his sadness over fallen comrades and his own relief at surviving his injuries. This is an unvarnished account of horror and heroism and a tribute to the unselfish devotion to duty of the LRPs, Rangers, and Green Berets.

Permian Period The: The History...

Among the most interesting of the prehistoric eras is the Permian age, the most extreme period in the planet’s history. It spanned 47 million years, beginning with an ice age, warming, and ending with the most cataclysmic volcanic episode in the planet’s history. The great bulk of all life on the Earth was almost immediately snuffed out, barely crawling back over the following 10 to 30 million years, and it set the stage for the “Age of Dinosaurs.”
What is termed by some as the “Pennsylvanian” or “Carboniferous” period prepared the emergence of the Permian age. Named for the abundance of rocks from the period found in the state of Pennsylvania, many prefer the term “Silesian” or “Carboniferous” era. In the preceding “Mississippian era,” warm, shallow seas disappeared causing serious upheaval to marine life in a tendency toward glaciation.
“Significant glaciation” marks the beginning of the Carboniferous immediately preceding the Permian. Carboniferous glaciation began in the late Ordovician Period long before. The eventual Andean-Saharan glaciation, a minor ice age, occurred later in the Silurian Age. These were all remnants of the “Snowball Earth” period of the Cryogenian.
The resultant sea level drop as the Carboniferous ice age set in produced conditions much like that of today, with ice on both poles, wet tropics near the equator and temperate regions in between. Despite similar conditions, the Carboniferous lacked the output of greenhouse gases produced by humans.
Fragments of plates collided as continents were still fusing into the supercontinent Pangea. During glaciation, “latitudinal climactic belts were widespread.” Permian rocks have been found on all the continents and some have been displaced “considerable distances from their original latitudes” in the Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras that followed the Permian.

This book shows that the eighteenth century was a time of transition to modernity, a time when the impact of the first globalization was being felt around the world. Old ways of life disappeared as new ways of organizing human activities emerged.

Most Americans have heard of the Little Bighorn, the 1876 battle in which a band of Lakota Sioux and their allies wiped out most of the 7th U.S. Cavalry under the command of George Armstrong Custer. The movie images are of fierce warriors in long eagle feather headdresses flowing behind them as they gallop across the plains on nimble Indian ponies. In fact, many Americans know the names of the commanders who beat Custer, most notably Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, and there are famous photographs of the stolid looking, copper-skinned Sitting Bull participating in Buffalo Bill’s “Wild West Show.”
Children in schools also learn that there were more battles in the coming years as American settlers pushed west, and names like Geronimo are instantly famous after the U.S. Army’s tough fight with the Apache. A few may even have learned of the formidable Comanches in the Texas Panhandle, and maybe even events like the Fetterman Massacre or the fights at Adobe Wells.
Today, far fewer people are familiar with the conflicts that took place east of the Mississippi before the Indian Wars of the late 19th century, fought in the forests and woodlands rather than on the prairies. The names of a few of the tribes involved are well known - the Cherokee, Iroquois and Seminole and Choctaw – while other formidable groups like the Yamasee, Miamis, Delaware, Powhatan, and Shawnee are less known. As whites pushed west from the East Coast, there were fights against the Abenaki, and during the French & Indian War, two regiments of Redcoats and colonial militia were decimated near what is now Pittsburgh. An alliance under Chief Pontiac threw the British and Americans out of the Great Lakes country for a time in the mid-18th century and had much to do with the fracture between colonies and the mother country. And tribal leaders like Blue Jacket and Little Turtle waged bitter wars in the Old Northwest, including inflicting the worst defeat ever of the U.S. Army.
