  The Han Dynasty, one of the most influential periods in Chinese history, emerged from the collapse of the Qin Dynasty in 206 BCE. After years of harsh rule under Qin Shi Huang, widespread unrest and rebellion led to the fall of the Qin. In the power vacuum that followed, Liu Bang, a commoner-turned-military leader, rose to prominence and ultimately established the Han Dynasty. His leadership and political acumen laid the foundation for a dynasty that would last over four centuries, shaping China’s governance, culture, and identity. 
  Liu Bang, later known as Emperor Gaozu, was originally a minor official under the Qin. Unlike his aristocratic rivals, he came from humble origins, making him a unique figure in Chinese history. As the Qin administration crumbled due to heavy taxation and forced labor policies, numerous factions vied for control. The most significant of these was the Chu-Han Contention, a prolonged struggle between Liu Bang and Xiang Yu, a powerful general of noble descent. Liu Bang, known for his ability to rally support from various social classes, ultimately defeated Xiang Yu at the Battle of Gaixia in 202 BCE. This victory marked the official beginning of the Han Dynasty, with Liu Bang declaring himself emperor. 
  Once in power, Liu Bang sought to distance his rule from the harsh legalist policies of the Qin. He adopted a more lenient and pragmatic approach, blending Confucian ideals with centralized governance. Although he retained elements of Qin’s bureaucratic structure, he reduced the severity of laws and punishments, earning the trust of the people. To ensure stability, he granted land and titles to his loyal followers, creating a semi-feudal system that allowed regional kings to govern under the central authority of the emperor. This balance between centralization and decentralization was a defining characteristic of early Han rule.

From a conventional upbringing, she chose to remain in London after the emigration of her family to Australia, first as an actress, then working alongside D'Oyly – she took over the reins as he became ill in the late 1880s. Until her death in 1913, she flourished and was famous, interviewed and admired, in a competitive, vibrant London that was the centre of world power and commerce. Queen of The Savoy charts Helen's course from Wigtown to the West End, where running a company with hundreds of employees, led to her fame and fortune. The artists Whistler and Sickert were friends and immortalised her in portraits. She was known in her time as the true founder of the Gilbert and Sullivan franchise and this biography will bring to light, some 110 years after her death, the extraordinary role that she played in one of Britain's greatest success stories.

  	Exhibitionism and narcissism coupled with talent are not the sole property of modern entertainment, as some might suppose. From the beginnings of American theater and film, various personality types prone to self-intoxication by the status of their own careers have acted-out at will in their public lives. For them there is no barrier between the professional and the private. 
  	In the early years of the 20th century, members of a clique residing at the Algonquin Hotel in New York City were emblematic of a shocking behavioral rebellion against societal norms. Led by humorist Dorothy Parker and others, they defended and glorified extremes of outspoken sexual expression and contrary lifestyles. In doing so, they became a popular source of entertainment in themselves, with behavior flying in the face of the normal decorum of the time. To those most staid in society, they represented the perfect foil for the righteously indignant, while to the titillated masses, they were a constant presence in the news of the day, and perversely admired for their brazenness.  
  	Tallulah Bankhead was a latecomer to the Algonquin Circle, and even the most hardened social rebels were not sure what to make of her. Demonstrating an early talent for the stage, Bankhead went on to stardom in live theater, film, radio, and early television. She was among the most parodied public figures of her time and could always be counted upon to shock by bringing her private behavior into the public arena of entertainment.  
  	At the same time, Bankhead had no qualms voicing her opinions about current events and hot button political topics, which often came at the expense of her own family, a fixture in Alabama politics. She became an avid supporter of the Civil Rights Movement, and that, along with her background in show business, helped land her on various lists.
