Summary

In "Rameau's Nephew," Denis Diderot crafts a provocative philosophical dialogue between two characters, exploring themes of morality, art, and the complexities of human nature. This literary gem, steeped in the Enlightenment tradition, utilizes a conversational style that deftly interweaves wit and satire, revealing the contradictions of the societal values of Diderot's time. Through the character of Rameau's nephew, Diderot presents a bold critique of social norms and the dichotomies of virtue and vice, challenging readers to question the authenticity of their beliefs and the role of art in society. Ian C. Johnston's new translation captures the vibrancy and nuance of Diderot's prose, making it accessible to contemporary audiences while preserving its philosophical depth. Denis Diderot (1713-1784) was a pivotal figure in the French Enlightenment, known for his contributions to literature, philosophy, and the arts. His role as co-founder of the Encyclopédie signifies his commitment to spreading knowledge and challenging traditional thought. Motivated by the turbulent socio-political landscape of 18th-century France, Diderot sought to engage readers in critical discourse, and "Rameau's Nephew" emerges as a culmination of his explorations into human psychology and cultural criticism. This seminal work is essential reading for anyone interested in the dynamics of Enlightenment thought, philosophical inquiry, and the evolution of literary dialogue. Diderot's keen insights and sharp observations remain relevant, inviting readers to contemplate the intricacies of morality and identity. Whether a scholar or a curious general reader, engaging with this text will provide a profound understanding of both the Enlightenment era and the timeless questions that continue to haunt humanity.

Long before the words of the Bible were written, God's communication through the spoken word rang out loud and clear. Jesus in particular commissioned representatives to speak on his behalf even during the time of his earthly ministry. And yet today we are a reading culture. It is easy for modern Christians to take for granted that the Bible was handed down in written form, but the way we receive God's message is far different from how the original hearers would have heard it. These differences not only shape the way that we hear God's message to his people, but they put us at risk of misunderstanding his revelation.
In Hear Ye the Word of the Lord, biblical scholar D. Brent Sandy explores how oral communication shaped the ways that biblical writers received God's message—and even more importantly, how the ancient and modern faithful receive it through hearing. Filled with helpful biblical insights related to oral communication and constructive ways for modern readers to become better hearers and performers of Scripture, Hear Ye the Word of the Lord provides a constructive way forward for readers interested in exploring how we can better hear God's Word.

"What mattered was that someone listened to me. Someone believed me, after 25 years. That means everything."

A mum of three who was abused and raped as a child by her own father has revealed her ordeal drove her into the clutches of middle-aged paedophiles.

Trish Hinde, 35, was sexually abused by her father, Gerard King, from the age of six. Alone and scared, she internalised her trauma and began suffering from violent seizures. Her father took responsibility for her epilepsy care, even abusing her on hospital visits.

Trish and her five siblings were neglected, often relying on neighbours for food and watching helplessly as bailiffs carried away their possessions. In her early teens, Trish was recklessly promiscuous and became a victim of child sexual exploitation, often finding herself in danger.

She reported her childhood abuse many times, in letters to family members and social workers, in an essay she wrote at school, to a therapist and to NSPCC. But, despite her father being jailed for abusing another child, her complaint never went any further. Trish became suicidal and despairing. Her relationships seemed doomed because she had damaging flashbacks and seizures whenever she became intimate.

But in 2015, she met her husband, Craig, and found true happiness. They had three children, Jacob, now six, Oscar, five and Jessica, three. But Trish was overly protective of her children and did not like her husband looking after their daughter. Realising her past history was damaging her marriage, she decided to go to the police. This time, at last, they listened.

In April 2022, Gerard King, 59, was convicted of rape, indecent assault and indecency with a child at Chester Crown Court. Trish maintains the court case and conviction were not important to her.
