Sinossi

'Welcome. Welcome to Bristol in 1963. Welcome to Waterloo Bridge in 2016. Welcome to a house in May 2017. Welcome to three couples and what might be, what once was and what could have been in 2017. Welcome to a West Indian household in 2018. Welcome to London in 2018. Welcome to the past, present and – crucially – the future.'
This anthology brings together six plays, all written or performed since 2017, by six brilliant Black British writers – Travis Alabanza, Firdos Ali, Natasha Gordon, Arinzé Kene, Chinonyerem Odimba and debbie tucker green.
The plays demonstrate a rich range of settings, forms, styles, locations, scales, contents and concerns – and explore themes including politics and protest, grief and colonisation, relationships and gender.
They have been seen on stages including the National Theatre, the Royal Court, the Bush and Bristol Old Vic, at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, in the West End, and on tour of the UK.
Selected and introduced by leading theatre director Natalie Ibu, Contemporary Plays by Black British Writers celebrates a multiplicity of stories authored by Black playwrights in the UK over the last decade.

this volume of the 10 volume series is subtitled "Tales of Horror and Death"
    - includes some of Poe's most famous works including "The Pit and the Pendulum", "The Cask of Amontillado", "The Fall of the House of Usher" and 10 others
Acclaimed American writer, Edgar Allan Poe (1809 to 1849) was known particularly for his mysteries and tales of the macabre. He was one of the country's earliest practitioners of the short story, and is considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre.
Poe's father abandoned the family when he was just 1 year old and his mother died the following year. He was taken in by John and Frances Allan and lived with them into young adulthood. Poe attended the University of Virginia but had to leave due to lack of money. He quarreled with John Allan over the lack of funds for his education. In 1827, Poe enlisted in the United States Army under an assumed name and also published his first collection. Poe failed as an officer cadet at West Point, decided to be a full-time writer, and thus the relationship with the Allans was severed.

Inspired by the positive reaction to our earlier bilingual Welsh/English poetry anthology about a Welsh road, A470 Poems for the Road/Cerddi'r Ffordd; we expanded our scope to Welsh rivers - any of them. with over 600 to choose from this proved a rich seam of invention for our Welsh poets, and a wide geographical range within Wales too. Our poets range from novices to luminaries of the Welsh Poetry scene. The outcome - 50 poems in their original language, whether that was English or Welsh, next to a translation, celebrating everything about Welsh rivers, from source to estuary, fresh and clean or culverted and polluted, childhood memory to recent flooding.

They say you can’t catch a fish with a hook.

It’s 1925, a world on the cusp of change. Hitler has published Mein Kampf and Mussolini has shut down the free press in Italy.

Three friends meet on a Scottish estate for a weekend of salmon fishing and convivial conversation over brandy and cigars: Winston Churchill, future world leader, ‘Bendor’, 2nd Duke of Westminster and Coco Chanel, iconic fashion entrepreneur. The narrative develops into a visceral account interspersed with sharp and insightful humour, revealing two men whose deep friendship is divided by their profound political differences, as each of them tries to navigate an uncertain world.

And then there is Coco Chanel, also an accomplished angler and Bendor’s mistress. She enters wearing furs and exits wearing waders.

In Winston & The Duke, Rory Fellowes delivers a thought-provoking play that invites the audience to question:
Have we learned anything from history?Should we pay attention to past events rather than purge them for comfort’s sake? Can controversial friendships exist openly and provoke change in today’s political arena?

That is for the listener to decide.

Winston & The Duke was developed through WIN: Writers Innovative Network and was directed by Maureen Payne-Hahner.

A collection of observations about the male of the species from one of the 20th century's most celebrated and renowned humorists, "Men I'm Not Married To" is a series of descriptions of nine men, all of whom Parker managed to avoid accompanying down the aisle. Some longer, some very short, each of these descriptions shows Parker's full range of wit, sardonic humor and wry cynicism. Dorothy Parker - social commentator, political reformer and legendary wit - has enjoyed a special place in American culture for almost a century and "Men I'm Not Married To" is an early example of Parker's unique and wry observations of the struggle between the sexes. It is presented here in its original and unabridged format.

In The Rose, award-winning poet Ariana Reines navigates the intersection of power and surrender. Drawing on the history of "romance" as the troubadours knew it and the titular flower's ancient allegories for sexuality and mystery, Reines plunges into feminine archetypes to explore masculine pain: "I have always liked helpless / & terrible men because they break my mind." In these poems, inherited ideologies of gender performance are replaced with bold vulnerability: paradoxes of power and surrender transmute the speaker's understanding of suffering, desire, and the soul.

The voice in The Rose is wry and bare, approaching the connection between erotic love and spirituality with humor. Investigating war, maternity, violent sensuality, and the role of language in magical acts, Reines is unafraid to uncover the "secret / & terrible shovelings / Of love," and the result is a bloody and pulsing, sexy and unabashed bloom.

Set against the backdrop of a small college town, the Heyst's familial tensions converge during the holiday weekend; not only is the family's livelihood at stake, but the debt collector has just come into town, the youngest daughter has returned from an institution unprompted, and there's even a question of fidelity to boot. However, against the simplicity of communal gatherings and the warmth of familial bonds, the worries that once seemed insurmountable begin to fade. And through the lens of Easter's promise of renewal, Strindberg suggests that life's burdens may be lighter than they appear, offering a glimpse of hope amidst the chaos of everyday existence.
