Sinopse

This Book of Poems offers a profound exploration of leadership in Africa; weaving through the continent's complex history with a focus on its earlier Kings and liberation leaders. It begins by addressing the harrowing impact of slavery and the valiant struggles against colonial powers to achieve independence. The narrative then shifts to the era of imperialism and the mixed blessings of globalization, which often did not align with the best interests of African people. It casts a critical eye on the consequences of poor governance and corruption, where leaders have exploited these resources for personal gain, to the detriment of their citizens. The poems poignantly depict the endemic poverty across many African nations, exacerbated by states' failure to provide basic social services, driving the youth towards terrorism as a means of survival. The collection underscores the necessity of effective leadership and governance for the prosperity of Africa's people. While it honors the leaders who fought for liberation, it also acknowledges their post-independence failings, including economic mismanagement, autocratic rule, and human rights violations. Ultimately, the book encourages reflection on the positive aspects of these leaders' legacies, urging the youth to learn from past mistakes and foster a brighter future for the continent.

What is a stalker? And what kind of life can a woman lead when she knows she is being followed, obsessively and perhaps dangerously, by one? This is the dilemma facing Theresa Bedell, a reporter in New York, in Rebecca Gilman's tensely fascinating new play. When Theresa goes on an awkward blind date with a friend of a friend, she sees no reason to continue the relationship--but the man, an attractive fellow named Tony, thinks otherwise. While Theresa is at first annoyed yet flattered by his continuing attention, her attitude gradually changes to one of fear and fury when he starts violently to menace her and those around her.In brilliantly delineating the kind of terror a woman in full control of her life feels when everything around her suddenly seems to be a threat, Gilman probes the dark side of relationships in the 1990s with the rich insight and compelling characterizations that have distinguished her earlier plays and made her one of the most exciting young playwrights working today.

Harold Hart Crane was born on the 21st July 1899 in Garrettsville, Ohio.
Crane was drawn to literature at an early age, becoming a voracious reader and pursuing self-education rather than attach himself to a more formal college education, although he did attend East High School in 1913. His developing love of poetry was nurtured with the works of the English Romantics and the French Symbolists, as well as near contemporary American poets.
Much of his youth was spent shuttling between Cleveland and New York as his parents’ marriage descended into continuing conflict before they separated with Crane still in his teens. Shortly after Crane attempted to enlist in the U S Military but was rejected for being a minor.
His first published poem also came in 1917 with ‘C33’ and its reference to the cell number that Oscar Wilde was incarcerated in.
Crane now centred more of his time in New York and immersed himself in the vibrant artistic scene of Greenwich Village. Alongside this he dabbled in various jobs to support himself, including copywriting and work in a munitions factory, as he continued to develop his ambitions for a poetic career.
His early work was already being noticed for its lush and rich use of words and by the time ‘White Buildings’ was published in 1926 he was being critically acclaimed.
Despite this success his personal life was troubled. It was both nourishing his work and fuelling complex patterns of despair as he sought to establish his identity. In a time when homosexuality was openly condemned his openly gay attitude sat uneasily as he pursued relationships that were both intense and emotionally fraught.
His acclaimed work ‘The Bridge’ in 1930 was both ambitious and a foundation stone for new American poetry. Against this his battles with depression and alcoholism were being lost.
Hart Crane died on the 27th April 1932 by jumping from the deck of a steamship into the Gulf of Mexico upon his return to the United States from Mexico. He was 32.

Icelight, Ranjit Hoskote's eighth collection of poems, enacts the experience of standing at the edge—of a life, a landscape, a world assuming new contours or going up in flames. Yet, the protagonists of these poems also stand at the edge of epiphany. In the title poem, we meet the Neolithic cave-dweller who, dazzled by a shapeshifting nature, crafts the first icon. The 'I' of these poems is not a sovereign 'I'. A questing, questioning voice, it locates itself in the web of life, in relation to the cosmos. In 'Tacet', the speaker asks: "What if I had/ no skin/ Of what/ am I the barometer?" Long committed to the Japanese mono no aware aesthetic, Hoskote embraces talismans, premonitions, fossils: active residues from the previous lives of people and places. Icelight is a book about transitions and departures, eloquent in its acceptance of transience in the face of mortality. AubadeRumours of wind, banners of cloud. The low earth shakes but the stormhas not arrived. You packfor the journey, look up, look throughthe doors at trees shedding their leavestoo soon, a track on which silk shoeswould be wasted, a moonstill dangling above a boat.Wearing your salt mask, you facethe mulberry shadows. The valley into whichyou're rappellingis you.
