Summary

David Hume's "The History of England" spans six comprehensive volumes that meticulously chronicle the development of English history from the invasion of Julius Caesar until the Glorious Revolution of 1688. Hume's narrative integrates a blend of meticulous historical detail with philosophical insights, employing a prose style that is both accessible and engaging. His work breaks away from the antiquated annals of historical writing by offering a more analytical approach, weaving together political, social, and cultural narratives that illuminate the interplay of events and characters, reflecting the Enlightenment ideals that defined his era. David Hume (1711-1776) was a key figure of the Scottish Enlightenment, known for his philosophical inquiries and skepticism about human understanding. His wide-ranging intellectual interests, including economics, religion, and human nature, significantly influenced his historical writing. Hume's intention was to provide a comprehensive and rational account of England'Äôs past, presenting it as a reflection of larger human experiences and moral lessons. This scholarly work is essential for readers seeking a deeper understanding of English history, as well as for those interested in the evolution of historical writing itself. It serves as both a historical reference and a philosophical exploration, making it a valuable addition to any library.

There is no doubt that the alphabets and forms of writing employed by most European languages comes directly from the Phoenicians, but the process by which that took place is still a mystery. Some of the ancient historians provided theories concerning how the Phoenicians gave their alphabet and system of writing to the Greeks, and Herodotus offered an account that is probably more accurate than most. He claimed, “The Phoenicians who came with Cadmus – amongst whom were the Gephyraei – introduced into Greece, after their settlement in the country, a number of accomplishments, of which the most important was writing, an art till then, I think, unknown to the Greeks. At first, they used the same characters as all the other Phoenicians, but as time went on, and they changed their language, they also changed the shape of their letters. At that period most of the Greeks in the neighborhood were Ionians; they were also taught these letters by the Phoenicians and adopted them, with a few alterations, for their own use, continuing to refer to them as Phoenician characters – as was only right, as the Phoenicians had introduced them.”
Like many of Herodotus’ other passages in Histories, there is truth wrapped with some errors. The Greeks certainly knew of the concept of writing before the Phoenicians, as the Mycenaeans used the Linear B script, but that knowledge had vanished at the end of the Bronze Age (Morkot 1996, 18). Perhaps what makes Herodotus’ account accurate and most interesting is his description of how the writing evolved. He mentions how the Greeks “changed the shape of their letters”, which is the normal course when any group of people adopts a script to write their native language. For example, there are slight variations in the Latin script employed by most modern Western European languages, such as the umlauts in German or the various accents in French and Spanish.

A wonderfully fresh and frank guide to why and how to write personal stories that will heal, liberate, inspire—and entertain—writers, readers, and listeners

Writing has been medicine for Nancy Slonim Aronie. At nine months old, her son Dan was diagnosed with diabetes. Then, at twenty-two, he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. During the years she and her husband took care of Dan, and when he died at age thirty-eight, Aronie could not find the book she needed. So she wrote her memoir.

In teaching memoir writing, Aronie has found that everyone has a story to tell and that telling it is important. Sharing "this is who I am, these are the things that shaped me, this is where I am now" allows a kind of magic and healing to happen. Over decades of writing and teaching, Aronie has created a set of prompts, directions, and examples that she shares in Memoir as Medicine. Listeners will learn how to write through where they have been and into deep understanding, profound healing, and even unexpected joy.

"Origins of Chinese Civilization: A History of China" by Hui Wang takes you on a journey through China's ancient past, told in a way that feels like you're listening to an elder recounting myths around a campfire. The book starts with Fuxi, the first leader, whose inventions like the Eight Trigrams and fishing nets shaped early Chinese culture. The story moves through key figures like Nüwa, who patched the sky and shaped humanity from clay, and the Yan Emperor, who pioneered agriculture and medicine. Finally, the legendary Yellow Emperor, known as a creator of civilization, brings the narrative into a more organized and developed era.
The legends are filled with fascinating myths—like Fuxi's miraculous birth from a footprint, or Nüwa molding people from earth, and the rise of agriculture through Emperor Yan's curiosity about plants. The author doesn't simply recite the historical figures but adds warmth, humor, and a sense of connection, making it easy to see why these stories have endured for thousands of years. It's not just about dates and events; it's about people trying to live better, inventing things that changed their daily lives, and facing challenges with creativity and resilience. This book is perfect for those who want to explore Chinese history not through dry facts but with lively storytelling that brings ancient China to life.
