Each poet has a particular style, an individual and unique way with words and yet each of us seems to recognise the path and destination of where the verses lead, even if sometimes the full comprehension may be a little beyond us. 
   
  Through the centuries every culture has produced verse to symbolize and to describe everything from everyday life, natural wonders, the human condition and even in its more hubristic moments, the crushing triumph of an enemy. 
   
  In the volumes of this series we take a look through the prism of individual regions of the United States through the centuries and decades. 
   
  The United States may be many things: the world’s policeman, a bully, a shameless purveyor of mass market culture but it also, in its better moments, a standard bearer for truth, transparency, equality and the more positive qualities of democracy. 
   
  Little wonder that’s its poets are rightly acknowledged as wonders of their art.  Leading lights in the fight against slavery and for equality, even if the rest of the Nation is finding it problematic to catch up.   
   
  In this volume we have collected verse from poets born in Pennsylvania, one of the most famous states of the Union.  Its proud and illustrious history shines out through verse by such illustrious and venerated names as Stephen Vincent Benet, Louisa May Alcott, Wallace Stevens, Hilda Doolittle, Henry Van Dyke, and others as they explore its status, its nature and its role in shaping the world of verse.

  With a storm of rebellion brewing, Annie does everything she can to secure her future. But sooner or later she will have to face up to the horror and trauma all around her, including her own.
  Azuka Oforka's play The Women of Llanrumney is a powerful, searing drama that explores the impact of slavery and the lives of women who experienced it – those who benefitted from it, those who were brutalised by it and those who fought to destroy it. It premiered at Sherman Theatre, Cardiff, in 2024, directed by Patricia Logue.
  Azuka Oforka was the joint winner of the Best Writer award at The Stage Debut Awards 2024.

  René Karl Wilhelm Johann Josef Maria Rilke was born into a troubled marriage on the 4th December 1875 in Prague, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.  His mother, having previously lost a baby girl, would dress the young boy up in girl’s clothing.   
  Later his father dispatched him to a military academy at age 10 but after a miserable 5 years the young Rilke left due to illness and instead entered first Prague and then Munich and finally Berlin university to study art history, philosophy and literature. 
  His initial forays into literature was in poetry.  His intense, mystical and lyrical style was much admired and over time inspired many in succeeding generations.    
  His short prose collection ‘Stories of God’, written in an impassioned burst over several nights was published in 1900 and offers a beguiling view of much of Rilke’s influences and outlook.  
  The following year he married the pioneering sculptor and artist Clara Westhoff.  The union produced one child, a daughter Ruth.   
  He lived in Paris for most of the Century’s first decade where he mixed with many great minds of the time.  Although he continued to write he also worked as a secretary to the sculptor, Rodin.   
  It was only after they settled in Switzerland in 1919 that his writing output was in full flow.  Here he wrote profusely in both German and French, which included much on his previous travels, his left-wing sympathies, his religious and existential thoughts, all part of a unique and consummate style. 
  From 1923 on, Rilke increasingly struggled with his health which was now in constant decline and often spent time rehabilitating at a sanatorium.   
  Rainer Maria Rilke died of leukaemia on the 29th December 1926 in Montreux, Switzerland.  He was 51.

  Poet, activist, educator, lawyer and diplomat, Corsino Fortes (1933-2015) was Cape Verde's ambassador to Portugal and Angola. Writing in Cape Verdean Creole and Portuguese, his first collection was published to great acclaim in 1974, the year Portugal's Estado Novo regime collapsed, leading to the decolonisation of Cape Verde and other African colonies in 1975. Corsino Fortes's poems offer vivid and often hallucinatory glimpses of the land, sea and people of his country - word-scapes rooted in the earth and the body. This is a wider selection of this seminal poet's work, translated by Daniel Hahn with the poet Sean O'Brien.
